Since the Philippines went into lockdown in March 2020, one of the first industries badly hit was live performing. We’ve gotten real-time accounts of this turmoil in our previous episodes, but this time we wanted to highlight performers who have, since then, found their groove and a new home in local streaming giant kumu.
Actor-couple Yanah Laurel and Rafa Siguion-Reyna each carry a lifetime of professional experience both on stage and on camera. Yanah launched her singing career in musicals like Kinky Boots while Rafa took to films and series like Goyo and Nang Ngumiti ang Langit.
Prior to the pandemic, their last great gig together was 2019’s hit OPM musical Ang Huling El Bimbo.
At the outset of lockdown, Yanah knew she had to adapt quickly, and took a chance with kumu, where she immediately started winning streaming “campaigns” and singing competitions. This compelled Rafa to try his hand, playing around with more casual streams like karaoke, gaming, and mukbang.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being perfectly imperfect and providing a space of connectivity.

Now, for Rappler’s first ever kumu live stream, Yanah and Rafa graciously showed us the ropes and shared their love for the “kumunity.” In this episode, they encourage all aspiring performers to try streaming, and most especially, support a platform that has elevated the Filipino tech industry.
