The National Counter Terrorism Agency says a Batam government official has left for Iraq to join the extremist group

JAKARTA, Indonesia—A government official in Indonesia is said be involved with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), according to the National Counter Terrorism Agency (BNPT).

On Friday, November 6, the BNPT said it is “85% sure” that Batam Director of One Stop Services Concession Agency Dwi Djoko Wiwoho has joined the terrorist group.

“We are coordinating with relevant agencies in dealing with the problem,” said Deputy Prevention on National Anti Terrorism Agency, Brigadier General Police Hamidin, who also said they had identified Wiwoho as a possible threat several months back.

He also said Wiwoho and his family are no longer in the country and that Wiwoho is allegedly in Iraq already.

“It shows ISIS has entered into various groups,” Hamidin said.

Hamidin also said it has been 4 months since Wiwoho stopped working, about the time when the BNPT started having suspicions.

A number of journalists covering Batam however, find the allegations hard to believe and said Wiwoho was always friendly.

“We did not think he was involved with ISIS,” said one journalist. —Rappler.com/ with reports from Antara
