‘Studio Ghibli’ theme park to open in 2022
A theme park featuring Hayao Miyazaki’s animated Ghibli classics is opening in Japan

MANILA, Philippines – The Cat Bus is finally on its way!

Famous Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli is set to open its first theme park in 2022, and fans of Totoro and friends can’t wait to see how the 450-acre park will look like.

Studio Ghibli creator Hayao Miyazaki’s works of art will be heading to the Expo 205 Aichi Commemorative Park area near Nagoya, Central Japan, according to a Variety report.

The opening date was announced on Saturday, June 1 at a Tokyo press conference by Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki, Aichi governor Hideaki Omura, and Chunichi Simbun newspaper CEO Uichiro Oshima – the trio behind the theme park’s construction. Miyazaki’s son, Goro Miyazaki, is also taking part.

The Studio Ghibli team will be taking charge of all creative concepts, as five themed areas are reportedly in the making, inspired by Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro, and other iconic films.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the park will also be in line in with Miyazaki’s pro-environmental stance – this means no trees will be cut in the process, and will be built in harmony with nature.

Additional attractions will open a year after the launch. A construction budget for the theme park was not revealed. – Rappler.com
