Mutya Pilipinas adds World Top Model as title in competition
MANILA, Philippines — After rebranding as Mutya Pilipinas, the organization led by its president Cory Quirino and chairperson Fred Yuson announced on Monday, July 8 that they have acquired another title for the Mutya Pilipinas competition.
Cory confirmed that they have secured the franchise of World Top Model, a modeling competition founded in Milan, Italy by Fiore Tondi.
"Nung in-offer yung World Top Model sa amin, ang una kong tanong sa aming chairman na si Fred Yuson, 'Fred, would you like to embrace the fashion and modeling world?' He's fashionable so ang sagot niya, why not accept?" Cory said.
(When World Top Model was offered to us, I asked our chairperson Fred Yuson 'Fred would you like to embrace the fashion and modeling world?' He's fashionable himself so he said, why not accept?)
"And so with the spirit of cooperation and friendship with World Top Model and yung may-ari na si Fiore Tondi, na pupunta po dito sa Pilipinas sa August 18 para sa (and the owner Fiore Tondi, who will becoming to the Philippines on August 18 for the) coronation night sa Pilipinas, with his help, we decided to include one more title —World Top Model Philippines."
With inclusion of the World Top Model, Mutya is positioning itself to become a "hybrid" of sorts, opening the gates for ladies who wish to enter the modeling industry.
World Top Model was founded by Fiore Tondi with support from his friend Guido Dolci, owner of Major Models Management, in 1990. This year's competition is scheduled on December 14, 2019 in Monte Carlo, Principality of Monaco.
The World Top Model is the latest title under the Mutya organization. Currently, Mutya has the following titles:
- Mutya Pilipinas — Miss Asia Pacific International
- Mutya Pilipinas — Miss Tourism International
- Mutya Pilipinas — Miss Tourism Queen of the Year International
- Mutya Pilipinas — Miss Overseas Communities
- World Top Model Philippines
According to Cory, what's different about World Top Model from the other competitions is that whether the representative wins or not, she is given a chance to train in Milan.
The winner of the World Top Model contest in Monaco will receive 200,000 Euro and a modeling contract with Major Models Management.
To help the Mutya organization in picking a potential representative for the competition, the organization decided to partner up with the Professional Models Association of the Philippines (PMAP), headed by its current president Anna Sideco.
"Our role for the World Top Model is to prepare this girl, this very lucky and special girl who will be sent in Monaco to compete. So in behalf of my team, we would like to accept this tie up and we're very excited. And hopefully we will have more pageants like this who will focus on the modeling industry," Anna said.
Cory clarified that even with the inclusion of the World Top Model title, there will be no discrimination from the candidates who will vie for Mutya.
"We're going to treat all our candidates fairly, except the requirements of World Top Model will have a minimum height requirement of 5'9. There will still be a Q and A and our candidate for World Top Model will still have to go through the entire process of a beauty queen. So there's no different except another opportunity, another window for growth for our winner," she said.
Anna said that in selecting a representative, the candidate must possess both the qualities of a beauty queen and a model.
"What we wanted to get is a girl that can do both because in the Philippines, we know that modeling is not really on top. It's always either being an actor or a beauty queen. And so we want to change that because abroad as you know in New York, Milan, in Europe, fashion models they like rule the fashion industry. But here, it's always the opposite... so that's what we want to tap into," she said in a mix of English and Filipino.
Anna added: "Of course we want to select a well round girl but who can shift like you know a chameleon who can transform from being a beauty queen...so we want a girl who can easily shift from those two worlds."
The Mutya organization is currently finishing its national search for the 40 candidates who will compete in the competition. Coronation night is scheduled on August 18 at the Mall of Asia Arena. – Rappler.com
