Vanessa Ponce de Leon, Rohit Khandelwal are in Manila for the Mr World 2019 finals night
For the past two weeks, the Miss World Philippines Organization led by National Director, Arnold Vegafria, have been entertaining 72 men from all over the world competing for the biennial Mr World pageant. The men have participated in their fast track challenges, visited tourist destinations, and shared quality time with the children at the Tuloy Foundation of Fr. Rocky Evangelista.
Miss World Organization Chairperson Julia Morley, Miss World 2018 Vanessa Ponce de Leon, and Miss World 2016 Stephanie del Valle are in town to welcome their Mr World brothers. The reigning Mr World 2016 Rohit Khandelwal of India arrived in Manila to relinquish his title. He was crowned on July 19, 2016 and is the longest reigning Mister World.
It truly has been a long journey for Rohit. “I’m really excited to meet all the contestants, to be a part of this amazing big ceremony. To meet you all especially, Philippines, can’t believe it’s happening here and very, very excited," he said."
“It’s been the longest reign and I can’t believe I’m giving my title away. This is suddenly happening but it has to happen, it is very certain. And I hope the one who deserves really takes over the title and takes the legacy ahead.”
When asked if his successor should equal or eclipse his accomplishments Rohit added: “I’ll be really happy whoever the new Mr World will do much more achievements than I have done. Because I love the title, I love everything about Mr World. I really wish this brand becomes more bigger. I’m sure whoever wins, since this time we have a very tough competition from what I have been following in the Philippines. So I’m sure the’ye gonna do something big, something great and my wishes for the person who’s going to win the title.”
As pageant crazed as the Filipinos are, male pageantry isn’t as mainstream as its female counterpart. In a interview with Miss World 2018 Vanessa Ponce de Leon, she was asked if she was familiar with Mr World prior to being here and what sets Mr World apart from Miss World.
She said, “To be honest, I wasn’t very familiar with it as well. But as I read more about the pageant, it is similar to Miss World. It is about seeing what the guys have to bring to the table besides being beautiful because they all are very handsome guys, you will see. Some of them are professional athletes, some of them are teachers, some of them are dentists, we have photographers. It’s how they bring their talents to the show. It’s also not about being scared because they have lots of physical activities. I’m not a very sporty girl. But it’s more about them not being afraid, to try new things and get out of their comfort zone. I think that’s what Mr World is about.”
She went on to talk about one of the hightlights of the competition. “I think one of the highlights is the extreme challenge. We don’t have this at Miss World but it’s something very exciting. The guys do these extreme actvities that they have to go through. You can see that they’re very competitive, very passionate and they just go full gas with.”
All 72 candidates went to Laguna for the Extreme Challenge along with the MWO and MWP General Manager Arnold Mercado. Mr. World Philippines JB Saliba has been an amazing host delegate and has been very active using his social media to update everyone about their daily activities.
It’s only a fews days before the Mr World Finals and Rohit was asked what advice he could share with the candidates.
“I’ve been a part of Mr World and at this point in time, I guess most of them are nervous. They’ve put so much of their efforts at Mr World and all the sub contests. But I believe and I would suggest to them to never take it as a competition. It’s never a competition, it’s about their personalities. Mr World is not a race, it’s about their personality which they have in themselves.
"They just have to unleash it, they just gotta show it. So my suggestion to them is to not force things too much, be themselves. Because in life I believe everything goes with ease. If they could do that, I think that would be the best thing. Creating an impact coming here is more important than winning.”
The Mr World 2019 Finals will be held at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on August 23, 2019. Actress, model and Miss World 2013 Megan Young will be hosting the event for the third time. Tickets are available at www.ticketnet.com.ph — Rappler.com
