Nichole Manalo’s quest for a back-to-back Miss Globe crown
Nichole hopes to bring home the second Miss Globe title after Ann Lorraine Colis won in 2015

MANILA, Philippines – Binibining Pilipinas Globe 2016 Nichole Manalo knows that she has a great task on her shoulders as she aims for the first back-to-back win at the Miss Globe pageant’s coronation night, to be held November 25 in Albania.

Nichole will vie for the title currently held by the Philippines’ Ann Lorraine Colis. Maxine Medina, who won the title of Miss Universe Philippines 2016, will compete on January 30, 2017. Pia Wurtzbach will crown her successor in the Philippines.

At the send-off party for her and Bb Pilipinas Supranational 2016 Joanna Eden Thursday, November 10, Nichole was asked how she felt about her chances at a back-to-back win for the Philippines. Nichole, a registered nurse by profession, said that she has put in a lot of work preparing for the competition. (8 fun facts: Bb Pilipinas Globe 2016 Nichole Manalo)

Well, I could say that I was diligent to learn. Bb Pilipinas [Charities Inc] was very generous enough for us to have training. And I really took it seriously and I hope to bring my learnings with me in Albania,” she said.

“I know it will be challenging for me to bring home the next Globe crown for the Philippines but I also know that it’s worth doing because I know I worked hard for this, to win.”

Nichole said that she and Ann would message each other, and Nichole would ask for tips. Ann is now in Albania awaiting the arrival of the candidates.

Hindi ko naman siya idedeny na may pressure talaga. (I won’t deny that there’s pressure) But ever since, I’ve always took it positively to motivate me, to inspire me that it’s possible. It would be challenging I know, but it’s possible, it’s worth doing,” she said.

She also said that she always reminds herself to be humble.

I always believe that there’s nothing wrong with being confident. But you should always keep in mind to be humble enough to know that you’re in a competition. You just have to be yourself, you just have to enjoy and show them that Filipinos are friendly. Yes, there is a sash factor but I’m also a candidate who wants to win,” she said.

The Miss Globe pageant was initially scheduled to be held in Canada but the location was later switched to Albania. While she’s excited to compete in Europe, Nichole also knows there would have been significant Filipino support had it been held in Canada.

Excited ako talaga pero I know na mas malawak ang pageant fans sa Canada, mas maraming Pinoy, kasi kaunti lang ang Pinoy sa Albania. Pero at the same time, privileged din ako to go in a developing country na sobrang rich ng culture. I want to learn more about their culture…it’s so inspiring for me to learn [about] another country with so much history,” she said of the trip to Albania.

Coming from a family of beauty queens, she is the 4th in the family to compete in a beauty contest. Her aunt Nenita Ramos-Licaros competed as Bb Pilipinas International 1968, older sister Kate was former Bb Pilipinas World 2002, while her other sister, Bianca, an actress, was Miss Universe Philippines in 2009.

They just told me to enjoy the moment, savor the moment because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. And they always remind to make sure that I’m doing it not just for myself but for the country, for the Lord,” says Nichole of her family.

She also excitedly mentioned that her mom, sisters, and aunt will fly to Albania to watch her and knows that her late father would have wanted to see her compete.

“My sisters and my mom actually like Bianca and my mom and my aunt will be joining me and be watching me in Albania. But ever since after winning Bb Pilipinas Globe, I always believed that my father will watch me just this time in heaven,” she said. Nichole and her family lost her dad Rodrigo last April 2015.

Almost every man can be a father, but it takes one selfless love to be a dad. Happy Father’s Day, Daddy! I love you!

For now, Nichole is focused on fulfilling her mission. When asked what she thinks is special about Filipino women, she said: “Ang Filipina, when we do things, we’re so passionate. Kaya siguro ‘yung passion natin nakikita – nakikita ng organization, nakikita ng beauty pageant na ni-rerepresent natin, and I guess when you’re passionate in something, parang lalabas lahat, Lalabas kung sino ka, lalabas kung gaano mo kagusto. So siguro ganun lang ‘yung tiwala nila sa mga Filipina kasi pag may ginusto tayo, we make sure na gagawin natin lahat para makuha iyon.”

(The Filipinas, when we do things, we’re so passionate. I guess they see our passion – the organization sees it, the beauty pageants that we represent see it, and I guess when you’re passionate about something, everything will reveal itself. Your true self will come out, the determination you have will come out. So I guess that’s how much they trust the Filipinas because if we want something, we make sure to do everything to achieve it.)

Nichole leaves for Albania on Monday, November 14.– Rappler.com
