MANILA, Philippines – A day after arriving in China for the Miss World competition, Philippine bet Laura Lehmann immediately went to work as she and the other ladies auditioned for a spot in the pageant’s “Dances of the World” segment.

The “Dances of the World” is a segment where candidates get a chance to show a dance number from their respective countries.

Laura shared photos of her Filipiniana costume designed by Miss World Philippines manager Bessie Besana.

“Day 1: Dances of the World! Saw so many beautiful traditional costumes today and it just made me so much more excited to learn about all these different cultures,” she said.

Bessie gave details of the Filipiniana ensemble on Facebook.

“It was indeed a challenge to create this costume not because of anything but the idea that it should be ‘danceable.’ I had to make sure that when Laura does her turns and flips, that the skirt goes along with it. On top of that, choosing the material that will look with dimension is also critical in the process. When taken close-up and from afar, the costume must not look flat.

“And since Lau has a very sweet personality, I decided that 3D floral appliqués are best for this ensemble. And in case you’re wondering, yes it took a lot of manpower to ensure that appliqués are well placed. All the best, Laura! May you get into the Dances of the World segment.”

Bessie mentioned that Laura trained under the Ramon Obusan dance company for her dance piece for the segment.

Laura also posted photos with some of her co-candidates – her roommate Miss Vietnam, Miss Indonesia, and Miss Venezuela.

Laura will compete along with 100 candidates for the Miss World crown currently held by Stephanie del Valle of Puerto Rico. The competition will be held on November 18 in Sanya, China. – Rappler.com
