Floral prints signal that summer is fast approaching. Welcome the new season with open arms by wearing the trend.

STOP AND SMELL THE FLOWERS. Floral prints can lift your mood like real flowers would! Photos by Bug Nieva

MANILA, Philippines – Summer is fast approaching for us in the Philippines, while other countries with 4 seasons are enjoying the “soft” coolness of spring.

Spring’s sunshine is not as harsh as it would be in summer. In countries with snow, the snow from winter is probably melting, revealing once more the colors and beauty of nature.

I am a person who loves colors, and prints cheer me up. Those who know me also probably know that every day I carry around this floral bag that I bought 4 years ago in Primark in Glasgow. That’s how much I love it.

My floral bag has gone with me to MANY trips. I took this one in a recent trip to Puerto Galera.

Florals are a staple in spring-summer fashion. They are actually one of the signs that the dark and dreary winter in other countries is over and summer is fast approaching.

Just how do you wear floral? Let me show you some ways:

1. Choose a color palette and size of floral prints you’re comfortable with

If you’re not really the print or floral type of person but want to be in on the trend, go “subtle” with your floral outfit.

The lighter the colors and the smaller the prints, the less attention you’ll call to yourself while you enjoy the feeling of wearing a happy outfit. I suggest you choose it in light fabrics, too, as this will “weaken” the print some more.

Floral prints scream "boho" too!

2. Add spunk to your floral outfit with some solid color

Okay, so you’re wearing floral. But since it IS a trend, that means a host of other girls will be doing the same thing.

Stand out by wearing it differently. Break the rules and don’t just be “girly.” Show your personality by adding an element to your floral outfit that will tell other people that you have your own style, your own touch, and that you won’t just blend in.

Florals aren't always just girly; they can be sassy, too

3. Pair florals with another type of print

Yes, it is possible. Florals can go with other types of prints, depending on how you style (and carry!) yourself.

Give summer’s nautical trend of stripes a twist by pairing it with florals. Again, if you don’t want to call too much attention, choose a subtle palette. The combination is young, spunky, and spirited. (And, yes, florals go well with polka dots, too!)

Florals can go with another type of print. It's how you wear it.

4. Pair florals with florals

If you want to stand out and have the guts to wear clashing prints, this is the style for you.

Remember that big prints make you look bigger and small prints make you look smaller. A good outfit of clashing prints would be a balance of both.

If you’re light on top, wear the bigger prints there and the smaller prints for your bottom, and vice versa. Be careful with the accessories, though. They can be too much for an already busy outfit.

For busy outfits like this, go for simple lines with your silhouette

5. Layer florals

For standout workwear, you can try this one, but make sure to use floral pieces that are monochromatic.

By this I mean a piece whose floral prints blend with the main color of the piece, like the ones our model is wearing. Choose accessories that match the prints of the outfit so as not to make it too busy. But of course, this is just a suggestion. Go loud, proud, and bold as you want to be. Show your personality!

Good styling is key to layered prints

6. Don’t let the floral prints hide your shape

Belted floral dresses and colarless tops and dresses are trends this summer (think ladylike silhouettes and structured dresses a la “Mad Men”).

Show off your shape by choosing the right belt that can balance what can otherwise be a loose outfit. Wear it at the small of your waist so that the fabric will adjust to it properly, and you won’t end up feeling and looking uncomfortable.

A good belt can do wonders for your outfit

It’s not so hard to wear florals, right? And it’s also not hard to standout while wearing the trend, should you choose to do so.

The key: know what works for you and what you’re comfortable in. Once you stick with these, styling yourself will easily follow. – Rappler.com
