MANILA, Philippines – As if in response to humanity’s collective anxiety over the coming decade, PANTONE announced Thursday, December 5, that “Classic Blue” would be 2020’s color of the year.

“A timeless and enduring blue hue, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue is elegant in its simplicity. Suggestive of the sky at dusk, the reassuring qualities of the thought-provoking PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue highlight our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era,” said the company, which has been releasing a color of the year since 1999.

Pantone added: “Imprinted in our psyches as a restful color, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue brings a sense of peace and tranquility to the human spirit, offering refuge. Aiding concentration and bringing laser like clarity, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue re-centers our thoughts. A reflective blue tone, Classic Blue fosters resilience.”

And as if its reasons behind choosing the calming color wasn’t enough, Pantone also said: “As technology continues to race ahead of the human ability to process it all, it is easy to understand why we gravitate to colors that are honest and offer the promise of protection. Non-aggressive and easily relatable, the trusted PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue lends itself to relaxed interaction. Associated with the return of another day, this universal favorite is comfortably embraced.”

Pantone has picked a “Color of the Year” for over 2 decades. Each choice, according to the company “requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis.” This means they go through different color influences – from the entertainment industry to new technologies and even “upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention.”

Last year, Pantone picked Living Coral, “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge” as its color of the year. –
