Social media movers: Tatt Awards 2013 launched
MANILA, Philippines - Who are the social media movers of 2013? Only netizens can answer that through Tatt Awards 2013 which launched its call for nominees last April 19 at URBN Bar and Kitchen, Taguig.
Now on its 3rd year, Tatt Awards aims to raise the bar for online content by recognizing individuals who use social media to make positive change in their community.
Past awardees include online and offline personality Bianca Gonzalez, comedian Mikey Bustos and Bogart the Explorer.
This year, the number of categories has ballooned from 10 to 13. The categories are:
- Blogger Phenom of the Year
- Trending Twitter Phenom of the Year
- YouTube Phenom of the Year
- Instagram Phenom of the Year
- Best Social Media Movement
- Best Comedy on YouTube
- Best Music on YouTube
- Best Style Blog
- Best Sports Blog or Microblog
- Best Tech Blog or Podcast
- Best Photo Blog or Microblog
- Best Travel or Food Blog
The 13th category is all up to netizens. This user-generated category and its winner will be decided by a process of online voting and final choice by a panel of judges called the Tatt Council.
The council is composed of leaders on the frontier of social media: Rappler CEO Maria Ressa; author of the country’s leading tech blog Yugatech.com, Abe Olandres; Our Awesome Planet’s Anton Diaz; Original Pilipino Music advocate and social media personality Jim Paredes; international model Joey Mead-King; photographer BJ Pascual; YouTube sensation and comedian Mikey Bustos; TV and social media personality Bianca Gonzalez; Mashable’s Bianca Consunji and sports analyst and ABS-CBN reporter/anchor TJ Manotoc.
Vote out loud
After a free-for-all search of nominations and 13th category suggestions from netizens, the Tatt Council will screen them and come up with a shortlist of finalists based on the following criteria:
Content quality – 40%
Social media impact – 20%
Relevance of content to the category – 10%
The remaining 30% of the total score will be determined by the social media engagement, influence and popularity of the nominee based on the number of fans, followers and subscribers (20%) and public voting (10%).
Anyone with a Facebook, Twitter or Google account can nominate by visiting www.TattAwards.com and filling out the nomination form. You can nominate as many people as you want and suggest any category you think should be included in the awards.
To better understand the selection and voting format, here is the schedule of each phase.
April 19-May 10: Netizens nominate for the categories and suggest 13th category
May 13-23: Screening of nominations based on social media engagement and popularity
May 24-June 12: Screening of nominations by Tatt Council
June 13-23: Finalists announced and public voting
End of June: Winners announced
Major category winners will receive P100,000 in cash while regular award winners will receive P50,000 in cash.
Social media movers speak
During the launch of Tatt Awards 2013, Rappler asked social media movers for their insights on the social media scene in the Philippines or among Filipinos.
Tatt Awardee and now Tatt Council member Bianca Gonzalez applauded how active Filipinos are on social media but cautioned against some bad habits.
“We’re awesome in the sense that we’re the social media capital. We just need to fine-tune a bit because we’re big on ganging up on both good and bad,” she said.
“But then, it’s so new. Unlike traditional forms of media that have frameworks and rules, it’s still new and everyone else is still learning it.”
Gonzalez said there is a form of netiquette many Filipinos have yet to learn. “What you say online, you should be able to say offline or in person. A lot of bashers are accused of hiding behind their profile. Meaning, if they were in front of you, hindi nila masasabi sa ‘yo (they can’t say it to your face).”
When asked about the impact Tatt Awards or an awards for social media can make, she enthused, “Super big. Especially these YouTube sensations or the people you stalk on Instagram even if they aren’t celebrities. They have awesome content but have no mainstream avenue to share it. That’s why this is important. When they win, more people will know about them.”
So what does it take to be a social media mover?
Head of Nomadic Broadband Business Dong Ronquillo said it’s all about staying true to yourself.
“Be who you are. I think that’s the best way to make an impact. Be who you are and influence the people around you because of the way you think, the way you feel and motivate other people to do the same.”
Gonzalez added that you become a social media mover when “you post online or you share your opinion or creative output not hoping to be famous for it. You post it because it’s your passion, because you really believe in it.
