MANILA, Philippines – “Having the right piece of shapewear can help you feel so much better in what you’re wearing,” explains Stephanie Mailhot, international account associate of one of the biggest growing underwear brands in the world: Spanx.

What started with founder Sara Blakely cutting off the feet from her pantyhose to create a blemish-free look while wearing some tight-fitting pants, has now grown into a US$1 billion conglomerate, according to Forbes.

In just 10 years the former saleswoman has become a billionaire rubbing shoulders with the likes of Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, and no less than Oprah Winfrey singing praises for her and her products — because of underwear.

“And that’s what we want to do: inspire confidence in women and make them feel like the best that they can feel in their clothes,” says Mailhot. For men, underwear is pretty straightforward. But for the ladies, “finding the right undergarments is important as it can make your outfit look even better.”

During the recent launch of their new line, ASSETS Red Hot Label, in Makati City, Mailhot shared with Rappler some tips on how to find the perfect pair of undergarments and how to take care of them.

1. Always find the right size

“Don’t try to size smaller than you actually are. It’s important to remember that one size doesn’t fit all. Depending on your shape and size, you might like different products. Different women like different kinds of products, so it just depends on your body and what your trouble area is. If yours is your tummy or your thighs, choose products that address that. Definitely ask the people in the store to help you out.”

2. Choose shapewear based on what outfit you’re planning to wear

“If you’re wearing a very short skirt, you should choose a brief style. Or if you have a knee-length dress, you can choose a slit or a mid-thigh. At the same time, think about what your trouble area is, what you’re trying to make better or hide. Lastly, think about what occasion you’re shopping for. Is it for your normal work outfit or for your wedding day? Have that in mind.”

3. Take care of your undergarments

“It depends on the instructions on the product, but when it comes to laundry, we always recommend hand washing your undergarments. As for the shelf life for our products, it just depends on how much you use it. But if you feel that you need a new pair, you should get a new pair.” – Rappler.com
