MANILA, Philippines – Android users no longer need to feel excluded from one of the hippest mobile photosharing networks out there, after the long-time iOS exclusive app was released on Google’s mobile OS Wednesday, April 4 (April 3 in the US).
Instagram is a photo sharing application that lets users apply a digital filter on a photo and share it with friends, either on the Instagram network or on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter. It was originally available only for iOS devices when it was released on the iTunes App Store back in October 6, 2010.
Instagram Co-founder Kevin Systrom teased the app’s arrival on Android at SXSW 2012 last March but gave no clue about when the app would be released. A signup page was then provided for eager Android users, promising them an email notification once the app would finally be made available to them. That email was sent out to users today (April 3 in the US).
Systrom says the app now has 30 million users after being on the market for a year and a half and is looking to hit 100 million users with its arrival on Android. Instagram is compatible with Android powered devices that have the Froyo 2.2 OS or higher.
