The digitally savvy crowd socialize the old-fashioned way at IMMAP's open mic night

MANILA, Philippines – Iconic blue birds hung from the chandeliers, one perched on a waiter’s shoulder and a few formed from marshmallows were served as hors d’oeuvres.

It was a party tailored to tweeps.

ODE TO TWITTER. Even the ice sculpture was inspired by Twitter.

A group of influential digital marketers from the Internet & Mobile Marketing Association of the Philippines (IMMAP) hosted their second open mic night at the glitzy Salon de Ning in The Peninsula Manila on April 13.

The intention was to create a platform for fueling thoughtful discussion on 3 topics that were introduced by their hashtag, 1. #bawal (illegal) 2. #ItsMoreFuninThePhilippines and 3. #whatrocksmysocks.

Attendees tweeted to the hashtag #OpenMicNight from the event and their messages were displayed in real time at the venue.

But as it turned out, the nearly 200 attendees didn’t need much social prompting.

Socializing in real time

Don’t you follow @so-and-so, asked one attendee as an in road for striking up conversation with another. Everywhere, attendees were schmoozing and not hiding behind digital screens.

People chatted with the who’s who of the advertising world, from BBDO’s chief creative officer David Guerrero to the Advertising Board of the Philippines’ chairman Frederick M. Alegre and DDB Philippines’ executive creative director Joey Ong.

Speakers from Cebu winemaker Manny Osmeña, to 24 year-old mayor Pie Alvarez and Interaksyon editor-in-chief Roby Alampay were presented to fuel discussion on the 3 set topics.

Just as online, the threads of conversation were picked up and spread throughout the room.

Eventually the speakers were drowned out by the chattering attendees, proving that even at a face-to-face party for tweeps, the crowd is king. – Rappler.com
