What started as a yogurt and weight loss experiment became about yogurt and semen increase

WASHINGTON, United States of America — They say that the human DNA resembles that of a mouse by 99%, reason these rodents have fallen victims to tests for various drug and cosmetic brands intended for human use. This practice has remained despite numerous attempts by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) to abolish animal testing.

But much to PETA’s disdain, researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) led by cancer biologist Susan Erdman and evolutionary geneticist Eric Alm have been found to be treating rodents with sweet fermented milk and bacteria, simply known as yogurt.

Their goal was to “understand how a probiotic diet affects rates of obesity and its related complications, including cancer.” This research was a follow-up to results from the Harvard School of Public Health that suggested yogurt prevented age-related weight gain, being the eventual solution to obesity.

Playing with a group of 40 mice per gender, the researchers fed a starter course of high fat, low fiber, and low nutrient diet similar to junk food and then finished the meal off with vanilla-flavored yogurt.

Results were somewhat entertaining: the yogurt increased testes size in mice by 5%. Erdman called the enlarged testicles “mouse swagger.” This caused male mice to inseminate the females faster, hence multiplying the brood quicker than mice who weren’t being fed yogurt.

There are no studies on the effect of eating yogurt on semen or testicle growth. Could yogurt turn out to be one of the many answers to machismo and male vanity? – Rappler.com
