MANILA, Philippines – I was only 6 years old and starting with preschool when my mom left us to work abroad. That was in 1989; I can barely remember the exact details but what has stayed in my mind is her reason for leaving: our future.

True enough, with her hard work and selflessness, she was able to send us to college. My siblings and I were able to finish our studies and establish good careers.

We are thankful to her, because if she didn’t make that sacrifice, we may not be standing on where we are right now.

After more than 20 years of being away, our mother has returned. This month saw her first Mother’s Day in the Philippines after coming back.

Sadly, I was not able to spend it with her because I am now the one working overseas. But I know — no matter what we go through, and whether it’s Mother’s Day or just an ordinary day — we are physically together, we make the best out of it. For me, that is enough. For now.

I just hope that we can spend more time together. Long enough to compensate the time that we have been away from each other. Long enough to realize and harvest the fruit of her labor. And long enough for us to repay her sacrifices.

It is now our turn to work harder, and her turn to slow down, relax and enjoy every minute of her life.

I think every mom is the best in the world in their own, special way — just like my mom, for her unfathomable love and for big dreams for us.
