Picks for the family at Pottery Barn
Looking for that perfect lantern, rug, or sofa? Pottery Barn might just have what you’re looking for

Pottery Barn is now open in Manila. Have you visited yet? This is the first branch of the popular American home furnishings store in Southeast Asia.

Pottery Barn is the most popular brand of the company known as Williams-Sonoma. Founded in 1949 in Manhattan, New York, it offers elegant furniture and accessories for the home.

A unique feature of Pottery Barn stores is Design Studio, which offers expert advice from in-house design specialists that help customers design their dream homes. The brand gained widespread notice after it was featured in several high-profile TV shows, including FriendsSeinfeld, and Sex and The City.

Where it is: Pottery Barn is located at Central Square, the four-level retail enclave located at Bonifacio High Street Central, which also houses the country’s first cinema with 4DX technology. The entire building is owned by the Rustan’s Group’s Stores Specialists Inc. (SSI), which is also the official distributor of Pottery Barn in the Philippines.

What you’ll find: There is a visual overload when you walk into the store. On the ground floor are mostly items for the dining and living rooms, including tableware and cutlery, silverware, napkins, candles (including battery-operated ones) and candleholders, glassware, shelves and cabinets, towels and throw pillows and comfortable sofas and couches.

On the second level are items for the bedroom and other parts of the houses, including bed sheets, linen, rugs and carpets, and bath items and various other accessories. According to the release, Pottery Barn executives say the product offerings are exclusive to Pottery Barn and “reflects trends in interior design, including key geographical, cultural, and historical references, essential material and manufacturing innovations, and rising artistic and pop movements.”

While most of the items are sourced and imported from the United States, there are some that are made right here in the Philippines.

Most of the items there now are from the brand’s Summer 2014 collection, designed exclusively by Williams-Sonoma’s team of in-house designers and craftsmen.

Pottery Barn for kids: There is a dedicated section of the store exclusively for interior furnishings for children. There are premium beds and beddings, small tables and chairs, dressers, colorful towels, even backpacks and lunch kits.

How much? Items are only slightly more pricey than if you buy them in the US. You can get small items for as low as P175 (approx. $4) to furniture for as much as around P250,000 (approx. $5,771). Throw pillows, for example, start at P1950 or $45 (with coverings going for P595 or $13.74), dining chairs from P12,500 (about $288.55) to P15,000 (about $346.26), caterer’s napkins for P1450 ($33.47) for a set of 6, and bath towels for P1450.

Worth your time? If you’re in the midst of planning the interiors of your new home, or just redecorating your old one, a trip to Pottery Barn would be a good idea. Those familiar with the brand would know that they have tasteful and elegant pieces that go well with the typical Filipino home.

And if you’re unsure about what to get, the well-trained staff of the Pottery Barn Design Studio can help with “color scheme, to functional necessities, to material choices. Pottery Barn’s Design Studio offers professional interior consultation, free of charge.”

Pottery Barn is located at the first and second level of Central Square, Bonifacio High Street Central, Taguig City.
