PETA joins other animal rights organizations in promoting animal adoption

MANILA, Philippines – “I’m Uggie, and I was adopted.”

So goes the slogan accompanying the newest ad of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) featuring Uggie, the super cute dog from the award-winning silent movie, “The Artist.”

The film’s star, a rescue, is the poster dog for PETA’s “Adopt, Don’t Buy” campaign.

10 years ago, Uggie was an energetic puppy passed off by two different guardians who weren’t prepared to take care of the rambunctious Jack Russell terrier. It was dog trainer Omar Von Muller who saved him, stepping in to prevent Uggie from ending up in an animal shelter. Soon enough, Von Muller fell in love with Uggie’s fearless, playful attitude — and his star quality.

Today — following the success of Uggie’s debut film — the pooch is doing his part in help other dogs achieve their own rags-to-riches stories.

The blurb of Uggie’s PETA campaign goes, “Millions of Dogs Are Waiting in Animal Shelters for a Loving Home. Adopt, Don’t Buy.”

“Animal shelters are full to the brim with dogs and cats who are waiting for the opportunity to become the star of a loving family,” says PETA campaigns manager Rochelle Regodon. “PETA encourages everyone who is considering bringing a canine companion into their lives to save a life by adopting from an animal shelter — and never patronizing breeders or pet stores.”

Thousands of unwanted dogs are euthanized every year for lack of a loving home, while many more are left languishing in animal shelters.

Breeding facilities, pet stores and kennels continue to make the homeless-animal crisis worse. These profit-driven businesses are notorious for offering little comfort and care to the animals they buy and sell, and they continue to produce animals under these cruel conditions. PETA encourages everyone who has the time, love and resources for a dog or a cat to visit an animal shelter and adopt a homeless animal in need.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society has a number of animals up for adoption that interested parties (especially families) may want to visit. See if there’s chemistry, if you “click” with a rescue and possibly consider adoption. PAWS takes great care in matching the adoptables with persons or families wanting to adopt.

AN ADORABLE RESCUE. Rambo, Life & Style editor Kai Magsanoc's chihuahua, is a rescue.

Uggie received the Palm Dog Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and a special mention at the Prix Lumière Awards in France.

Among the other celebrities who promote animal adoption are Yvonne Strahovski, Justin Bieber, Booboo Stewart, Kellan Lutz, and Patricia Arquette.
