Looking back on the People Power Revolution with Ballet Manila’s ‘Rebel’
Prima ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde stars as Inang Bayan in Ballet Manila's production, which is set during the 1986 EDSA Revolution

MANILA, Philippines – February 25 marks the 30th anniversary of the People Power revolution, and to commemorate the event, Ballet Manila is presenting Rebel, a production set against the backdrop of the 1986 revolution.

According to the ballet’s press release, Rebel is about a hero’s journey to freedom, having been inspired by the story of Spartacus, a gladiator who led a slave uprising against the Romans.

Rebel will also feature music from the 1958 ballet Spartacus, which was composed by Russian Aram Khachaturian.

Starring in the ballet as Inang Bayan is Ballet Manila Artistic Director and CEO prima ballerina Lisa Macuja-Elizalde. Meanwhile, Inang Bayan will be given a voice through theater actress Joanna Ampil, who has been in a number of West End productions, including Miss Saigon and Les Miserables.

Lisa said that Rebel is her dream project. She’s had it in mind since 2010, but didn’t talk about it until 2013, when she met British choreogrpaher Martin Lawrance. “I was waiting for the right choreographer to share my ideas with,” Lisa explained.

As it’s set during 1986, Inang Bayan’s character will be joined by the Filipino everyman Juan dela Cruz (Michael Divinagracia, Rudolph Capongcol), Ferdinand the dictator (Gerardo Francisco, Brian Williamson), his wife Imelda (Tiffany Chiang-Janolo, Abigail Oliveiro), Ninoy the rebel (Rudy de Dios, Mark Sumaylo), and his beloved Corazon (Katherine Barkman, Dawna Reign Mangahas).

Rebel is set to go onstage at the Aliw Theater in Pasay City on the following dates:

  • February 25, 8 pm
  • February 26, 8 pm
  • February 27, 8 pm
  • February 28, 3 pm

Tickets are available through Ticketworld.
