FULL LIST: Aquino confers National Artist awards 2016
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Nine Filipinos were formally inducted into the Order of National Artists (Orden ng Pambansang Alagad ng Sining) on Thursday, April 14. President Benigno S. Aquino III conferred the National Artist award at the Malacañang Palace. According to Inquirer.net, the conferment ceremony was the largest yet.
Rules of the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) dictate that the award should be bestowed every 3 years.
In 2014, 6 of the awardees were proclaimed as National Artists by President Aquino, but was not conferred the award yet. They are:
- Cirilo F. Bautista (Literature)
- Alice G. Reyes (Dance)
- Ramon P. Santos (Music)
- Jose Maria V. Zaragoza (Architecture, posthumous)
- Francisco Feliciano (Music, posthumous)
- Francisco V. Coching (Visual Arts, posthumous)
In 2009, then-president Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo named 6 individuals as National Artists, but was not granted the award after a much-publicized controversy. Three from the list were removed by the Supreme Court.
The other 3 from this batch were posthumously awarded as National Artists:
- Federico Aguilar Alcuaz (Visual Arts)
- Manuel Conde (Cinema)
- Lazaro Francisco (Literature)
In his speech at the conferrment ceremony, President Aquino said, "Bukod sa pagiging pinakamagagaling na pintor, manunulat, musikero, mananayaw, artista, at iba pa, higit sa lahat, mabuti silang Pilipino. (Aside from being illustrious painters, writers, musicians dancers, artists, and more – above all, they are good Filipinos.)"
Nariyan po si Dr. Cirilo Bautista, sa kanyang natatanging ambag sa pagpapaunlad ng sining pampanitikan, at pagbabahagi nito sa mas nakababatang henerasyon; (Dr. Cirilo Bautista, for his exceptional contributions to the development of literature and to imparting this to the younger generation)
Si Lazaro Francisco, sa kanyang mga klasikong panitikang nagsusulong ng nasyonalismo, at nagpayaman ng Wikang Pambansa; (Lazaro Francisco, for his classic works that espouse nationalism and enrich our national language)
Si Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, sa kanyang pambihirang kahusayan sa Sining Biswal, sa pagpipinta man, eskultura o mixed media; (Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, for his extraordinary talent in the visual arts, whether it be through painting, sculpture, or mixed media)
Si Francisco Coching, sa kanyang mga akdang komiks na tumatalakay sa kultura ng mga Pilipino at mga usaping panlipunan; (Francisco Coching, for his comic books that discuss Filipino culture and society)
Si Dr. Francisco Feliciano, na nagpakilala ng ating katutubong musika, di lang sa Asya, kundi maging sa buong mundo; (Dr. Francisco Feliciano, who has introduced our indigenous music not only to Asia, but to the world)
Pinaparangalan din natin si Alice Reyes. Bilang mananayaw, choreographer, guro at direktor, isinulong at pinaunlad niya ang kontemporanyong sayaw sa bansa; (We also honor Alice Reyes. As a dancer, choreographer, teacher, and director, she has promoted and developed contemporary dance in the country)
Si Dr. Ramon Santos, sa kanyang di-matatawarang pananaliksik at pagsusulong ng modernong musika na nakaugat sa tradisyonal musika sa Asya; (Dr Ramon Santos, for his invaluable research and promoting modern music that is rooted in traditional Asian music)
Si Jose Maria Zaragoza, sa pagsisilbing pundasyon ng modernong arkitektura sa bansa, lalo na sa mga relihiyosong estruktura; (Jose Maria Zaragosa, for being the foundation of modern architecture in the country, especially for religious structures)
At si Manuel Conde, sa kanyang mga pelikulang sumasalamin sa ating kaugalian, kasaysayan at mga isyu ng lipunan na patuloy na nagpapamulat sa nagdaan at kasalukuyang henerasyon. (And Manuel Conde, for his films that reflect our attitudes, history, and social issues that have constantly made the past and present generations aware)
The president added, "Nagpakadalubhasa man ang marami sa inyo sa ibang bansa, pinili pa rin ninyong bumalik at ibahagi ang inyong nalalaman sa sariling bayan. Naabot man ninyo ang tuktok ng inyong propesyon, hindi kayo basta lang nakuntento, sa halip, patuloy ninyong pinagyaman ang inyong mga kaalaman at kakayahan. (You may be experts in other countries, yet you chose to return and impart your knowledge to your homeland. You may have reached the zenith of your careers, but you never settled for less; instead, you chose to enrich your own knowledge and capabilities.)"
"Kaya naman, buong-karangalan po akong humaharap sa inyo ngayon, at taos-pusong tumatanaw sa inyong dakilang kontribusyon. (This is why, I am honored to face all of you, and I sincerely acknowledge your great contributions.)"
The Order of National Artists is presided over by the NCCA and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Upon the recommendation of both, the President of the Philippines confers the National Artist award on Filipinos "who have made distinct contributions in the field of arts and letters." – Rappler.com
