MANILA, Philippines – John Lloyd Cruz is the subject of artist and musician Romeo Lee’s new painting, reports Coconuts Manila.

According to the report, the two have long been acquainted, but were formally introduced in February at an Art Fair Philippines cocktail. There was an instant rapport between Lee and the actor, who has a number of Lee’s paintings at his home.

After visits to Lee’s home to see more of his works, Cruz asked the artist to create his portrait.

The oil painting measuring 4×4 feet took 3 weeks to complete and is based on an online photo of Cruz, said Coconuts Manila.

Lee is broadly referred to as “the king of punk,” partly in admiration and in jest. He is a brother of filmmakers Ruben Lee and Roxlee, co-creator of the popular comic-strip “Cesar Asar” with another brother, Mon Lee.

A nephew, Topel Lee, is also a noted filmmaker.

The Lees are widely noted in the artistic community for the distinct individuality of each artist despite the freewheeling yet virtuosic style they all share. They are also admired for their outrageous humor.

Romeo Lee describes Cruz as “mabait, hindi mayabang [kind, not boastful].”

Another artist Cruz admires is Manuel Ocampo, a renowned Filipino artist with an international following who has designed album covers for singer-songwriter Beck and electro group Skinny Puppy.

Ocampo’s anti-clerico-fascist paintings – one of many diverse facets of his work – have generated considerable interest in predominantly Catholic Spain, of all places.

Ocampo had a recent show where Cruz was one of the guests. – Rappler.com
