MANILA, Philippines  National Artist for Architecture Ildefonso P. Santos passed away on Wednesday, January 29, due to multiple organ failure. He was 84.

Santos, known as the Father of Philippine Landscape Architecture, created hundreds of parks, plazas, gardens, and outdoor sites in the span of his 40-year career.

He was proclaimed National Artist in 2006 for his ability to incorporate Filipino physiological, behavioral, and social needs in his projects. Taking into account the need for shade, close-seating, conversation, and meal sharing, he created public yet intimate spaces conducive to social interaction.

Santos also helped establish the first university programs in landscape architecture, as well as the Philippine Association of Landscape Architects.

Among Santos’ well-known projects were Loyola Memorial Park in Manila, the Eternal Gardens Memorial Park in Caloocan City, the Caliraya Lake Resort in Laguna, the Batulao Village Club in Batangas, the Imus town plaza in Cavite, the Tagaytay Highland Resort, and the Rain Tree Sports Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

In honor of the national artist, a necrological ceremony will be held on Sunday, February 2, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo lobby (Main Theater lobby). Interment will follow at the Magallanes Crypt. – Rappler.com
