‘Talk Back and You’re Dead’: A look at the ‘gangster’ character
Author Alesana Marie talks about her story coming to life on the big screen, and how true the movie stays to the book

MANILA, Philippines – Some studios are now turning to young writers for fresh ideas, and through Wattpad, another story is coming to life on the big screen.

After Diary ng Panget to She’s Dating the Gangster, Alesana Marie’s Talk Back and You’re Dead was chosen by Viva Films and SkyLight Films, a subsidiary of Star Cinema, as the next story to tell on adapt.

The story revolves around the complicated relationship of Timothy Odelle Pendleton (TOP) , Samantha “Sam” Perez and Jared “Red” dela Cruz. Both TOP and Red are members of the ‘Lucky 13’ group.

At a press conference for the movie, Alesana gave more details about the direction of her book.

Yung gangster dito maangas, mayaman, na makuwela. Tapos ma-joke din sila, mga kalog. Kasi dito maraming action scenes,” Alesana explained.

(The gangster in the book is arrogant, rich, but funny. They like to joke, and  clown around. There are also many action scenes.)

When asked for the inspiration of her  story, Alesana said she wrote what she wanted to read.

Gusto ko siya basahin pero wala akong makita na story. Parang yung mga binabasa kong books, pero may mga scenario na gusto kong mangyari. Ako na lang gumawa and plano ko lang was to upload online para hindi siya mawala kasi online forever. After 5 years babasahin ko ulit.”

(I wanted to read something like it but I could not find a story. It is like the books I read but I have scenarios that I want to happen. I just wrote it, and my plan was to upload it online so it won’t disappear and it will be there forever. After 5 years, I will read it again.)

In an interview posted on YouTube, Alesana mentioned that Korean Pop (Kpop) was one of her inspirations, and that the character of Top was named after one of Big Bang’s members.

She is also grateful for websites like Wattpad, which has given writers like her the avenue to share stories and meet friends and other budding writers.

Sa Wattpad po ako na-discover. Nagkaroon ako nang maraming readers. Nakilala yung name ko,” Alesana said.

(I was discovered via Wattpad. I have many readers and my name became known.)

She is also happy that movie companies are now showing interest in putting stories from writers like her to film.

Nakakaproud po kasi nanggaling kami, nag-start kami sa website na iyon. Ngayon nadidiscover na po and maraming ngayong kabataan na gustong magsulat and gusto na rin sundan ang kanilang passion.”

(I feel proud because I started from that website. Now we are being discovered and there are so many of today’s youth who want to write and want to follow their passion.)

Sticking to the storyline

Alesana said that she is very happy that the director and scriptwriter decided to stick to the book’s storyline. She was consulted in every step as the film was made. She also said that she has a say  when it comes to the styling of the movie.

(Every meeting, the director and the scriptwriter consults with me. They would ask me what I would like to include in the movie. And then the scriptwriter would show me the scenes if I like it.)

Overall, Alesana said that she is happy how the film was made, and that her followers will definitely be happy to know that many of their favorite scenes will be in the film.

Yung sa movie po nag-stick sila sa book. Every detail nandoon, yung mga favorite scenes nilagay doon.”

(The movie stayed faithful to the book. Every detail is there, including the favorite scenes.)

Starring James Reid, Nadine Lustre, and Joseph Marco, Talk Back and You’re Dead opens on August 20.  – Rappler.com
