MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino graphic designer has been featured in various international websites for his work called “Mag + Art.”
Twenty-eight-year-old Eisen Bernardo, an artist from Los Baños, superimposes magazine covers into classical paintings, creating interesting mash-ups of modern and antique art.
Some of his works include a cover of Angelina Jolie cleverly combined with The Birth of Venus, a painting by Italian painter Sandro Botticelli. A magazine cover starring Adele was also superimposed on Leonardo Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa.

Bernardo’s works have been featured in international websites including Huffington Post France, Cosmopolitan France, Design Taxi, and Viral Nova.
Since the creation of his blog last July, “Mag + Art” has published more than 100 crafty combinations of fashion magazine covers and classical paintings. The blog has already received more than 20,000 notes and around 1,000 followers on Tumblr.
In an interview with Huffington Post France, Bernardo said that his latest work was his “way of comparing and contrasting modern and classical aesthetics” after realizing that contemporary magazine covers can appear to somehow be inspired by classical paintings.
“It is my way of giving homage to the magazines – as venue of human artistic expression and vehicle of popular culture,” said Bernardo to Huffington Post France.
“Mag + Art” has also been recognized in several websites from countries like Italy, Switzerland, Netherland, Germany, Austria, Russia, Turkey, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, India, Singapore, Thailand, Brazil, and Mexico.
Eisen is currently working as a multimedia producer and writer for the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity.
He was also a part-time professor at the De La Salle University Canlubang where he taught subjects in writing for print media, visual and graphics design, and layouting.
He has a degree in BS Development Communication, and is currently finishing his master’s degree in the same field. Though he has no formal art education, Bernardo says he “continuously hones and develops his creative skills in various fields such as digital photography, graphic, and print design, with reference to music, movies, and pop culture,” according to his Behance profile.
Aside from his current work, Bernardo also runs Cineminimized, a blog containing minimalist and cartoon versions of personalities and Pinoy Criterion, a collection of alternative Filipino movie posters. – Rappler.com
