Manila ventures ‘Into The Woods’ with nature-inspired production
Take a closer look at these beloved fairytale characters – in a different light

MANILA, Philippines – Watch your favorite fairy tale characters come alive as musical Into The Woods runs in garden amphitheater Kasalikasan in Bonifacio Global City starting February 21.

The musical tells the story of a childless baker and his wife cursed by a witch. In order to reverse this curse, the couple sets out to scavenge magical items. and they meet other fairy tale characters along the way.

It is a twisted, alternative take on the storybook characters Cinderella, Rapunzel, Red Riding Hood, and even Prince Charming.

Upstart Productions adapts a nature-inspired version of the twisted fairytale, created by Stephen Sondheim (West Side Story, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd) and James Lapine, and will run on Saturdays and Sundays from February 21 to March 15, 2015.

Joel Trinidad, Upstart’s founder and the director of the adapted musical, was inspired by the venue. “When we did Forbidden Broadway in Kasalikasan in May 2014, it was a huge success. So we started thinking about what other shows we could do here to really take advantage of this beautiful space.”

“We’ve always loved the musical,” shared Upstart Managing Director Onyl Torres, who does double duty as Vocal Coach for the present production, on choosing the fairytale musical. “So why not do it in the actual woods?”

The local production will also feature local performers, with Noel Trinidad (Be Careful With My Heart’s Don Roberto) as the narrator. When asked about whether he looks forward to working under son Joel for a change, he says, “I’ve been bossing Joel around for years. So now it’s his turn!”

Into The Woods first ran on Broadway in 1987, receiving numerous Tony awards despite the dominance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera. Recently, it’s been adapted for the big screen.

The film, directed by Rob Marshall (Chicago, Nine) is slated to open in Philippine theaters on January 28. It was also nominated for Best Picture for Comedy and Musical at the Golden Globes.
