MANILA, Philippines – Sometime in 2010, directors Bobby Garcia and Chari Arespacochaga of Atlantis Productions, the theater company I have performed with the most, asked me to be part of the cast of the musical “Rock Of Ages.”
Like many of you 30-somethings out there, I grew up rocking to ’80s music. It was another dream show come true for me. I had even recorded the main theme song of the show, “Don’t Stop Believing,” as part of my last album under Sony Music Philippines.
However, the target show dates got pushed back by a whole year. By then, I had moved to New York. With a heavy heart, I told Atlantis that I could no longer be in the show.

Little did I know that the 2012 run of “Rock of Ages” would be such a huge success that it was completely sold out after just the first weekend. Friends were messaging me desperately asking if I can hook them up with tickets, as if I had some inside track or special privilege. I wasn’t even part of the show!

“Rock of Ages” was such a roaring hit that a repeat was immediately put together for 2013. This time, as if it was always meant to be, I was in Manila and available to do the show. I have once again confirmed that whatever we believe, dream about and envision for ourselves will happen…eventually.
But what made “Rock of Ages” such a hit with Pinoys?
Most people consider theater to be for the elite; so how did this show manage to entice even the non-theater crowd to flock to the Carlos P. Romulo Theater at RCBC Makati?
I will give you my top 5 reasons why this show rocked Manila and why, if you missed it last year, you should hurry and get your tickets before they’re gone, baby, gone this time around:
1. You will know the lyrics and want to sing along to at least 95% of the songs
You’ll wanna tone it down so as not to annoy your seatmate who would rather listen to us!

2. International star Mig Ayesa’s masterful performance as Stacee Jaxx
He has performed this on Broadway and the US national tour, so to say that he has this role down pat is an understatement. Mig’s portrayal oozes with sex appeal but is also super funny.

3. You will fall in love with Vina Morales’ natural sweetness and innocence as the romantic female lead, Sherrie
Her years of experience as a concert performer also come in handy with the dance numbers. Oh, and her enviable rock-hard abs alone actually got applause from the audience in the 2012 run.
4. The script is hilarious!
Jett Pangan, Nyoy Volante, Jamie Wilson, Aiza Seguerra, Calvin Millado, Bibo Reyes and the rest of the cast will have you in stitches. It’s a laugh-a-minute show that will leave you smiling from ear to ear as you leave the theater.
Chari Arespacochaga’s direction keeps it tight and smooth. After all, comedy is all about good timing.
5. My husband says you have to come if only to see me in my Justice Charlier costume
See pic above to know what he means. Haha!
And there you have it. Convinced yet? For tickets, call Atlantis Productions at 892-7078. If tickets run out before you call, sorry! You’re missing out! – Rappler.com
Rachel Alejandro plays Justice Charlier in Atlantis Productions’ repeat run of ‘Rock Of Ages,’ currently showing at RCBC Makati every weekend until July 28. She co-owns The Sexy Chef (www.thesexychef.ph, Twitter @thesexychefph), a health food delivery and event catering company.
