The National Historical Commission of the Philippines released a statement on Wednesday, February 10, addressing the controversial lyrics of rapper Ez Mil on Lapu-Lapu in the song “Panalo.”

“The National Historical Commission welcomes new songs that inspire our people to think great and be informed our their history. But let us not compromise history and be conscious of our accountability on what we are conveying to the people,” said National Historical Commission chairperson and National Quincentennial Committee Executive Director Rene R. Escalante.

“Lapu-Lapu was definitely not killed in the battle of Mactan. The battle was a victory of our ancestors led by him.”

Ez Mil, real name Ezekiel Miller, drew flak for a line in his song that inaccurately portrayed how Lapu-Lapu died.

The verse goes: “Nanalo na ako nung una pa na pinugutan si Lapu sa Mactan.” (I already won the moment Lapu-[Lapu] was beheaded in Mactan.)

Lapu-Lapu city’s mayor earier asked Ez Mil to apologize for the song and to change the lyrics.

The rapper has since apologized to those who were offended by the song but said he will not change the lyrics. – Rappler.com
