Fujimoto’s newest work since the end of ‘Chainsaw Man’ garners over 2.5 million views in a day

On Monday, July 19, Viz Media’s online platform MANGA Plus released a 140-page one-shot manga called Look Back.

Look Back is about Fujino, a 4th grader who draws 4-panel manga in the school newspaper. Her manga makes her the star of the class, but that all changes when her shut-in classmate, Kyomoto, submits a better drawn manga for the paper.

It follows Fujino as she from an overconfident artist, drunk from the praise of those around her into someone willing to risk everything in order to become a full-fledged mangaka.

After the highly successful publication of Fujimoto’s previous work, Chainsaw Man, as well as his promise of a sequel, fans of the author have been very eager to see his next work.

That’s why to no one’s surprise, immediately after its sudden release, Fujimoto’s latest work was well received, with Shonen Jump Plus reporting in a tweet that the one-shot had received 2.5 million views in a single day.

“Today’s one-shot ‘Lookback’ Jump + First ever, over 2.5 million views in one day!” the tweet says.

It also garnered praise from fellow mangaka like Oshi no Ko’s Mengo Yokoyari, who tweeted in disbelief at the speed at which the Chainsaw Man author wrote and drew the entire thing.

“140 pages????????????????,” Yokoyari tweeted.

Chainsaw Man is Fujimoto’s most notable work, and is currently the fifth highest-selling manga of the year with over 11  million volumes in circulation as of June 2021.

The manga, which ended its first part in December 2020, is about Denji, who works as a devil hunter in order to pay off massive debts with the help of his friend Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil.

It went on to win Best Shonen Manga series at the 66th Shogakukan Awards as well as place in the top 5 in Kono Manga ga Sugoi’s manga guidebook, placing #4 in 2020 and #1 in 2021.

The series is set for an anime adaptation this year to be produced by Mappa, who also produced popular anime like Attack on Titan season 4 and Jujutsu Kaisen. The studio also dropped the first trailer for the Chainsaw Man anime. – Adrian Soriano/Rappler.com
