Dani Barretto and Laureen Uy share their summer skincare tips
MANILA, Philippines – With beach trips, pool parties, fun getaways, summer season is definitely closer than ever. But it’s always a tricky time for beauty. While we want our skin to have that “glow from within look” it somehow always ends up looking shinier than the sequined gowns we wore at prom.
They say the key is minimal makeup, maximum sun protection, and staying hydrated. Don’t let bad skin get in the way of a perfect getaway. Here are a few simple tips to help you look glowing and beach-ready.
Keep your skin clean
It’s as basic as it goes and you’re probably doing it on a regular basis but keeping your skin clean during the summer months can do you wonders. This time of year, our skin gets even oilier and with prolonged exposure to sun and pollution, it may be necessary to wash your skin more than usual. Also, never go to bed with your makeup on.
Don’t skip on the moisturizer
It’s tempting to skip moisturizer but no matter how hot and sweaty your face gets, it still needs a little bit of hydration. Opt for lightweight gel- and water-based moisturizers that won’t leave your skin feeling greasy.
While we can’t argue about the health benefits of a little summer sunshine, too much exposure can lead to skin damage and cause aging. When it comes to sunscreen, you’re probably never wearing enough. Lifestyle blogger Laureen Uy shared that it’s always important to put sunscreen on even on normal days even when you’re not heading to the beach.
“UV rays can be harmful. Sobrang harsh na ng sun (the sun is very harsh)… not only when you’re going to the beach, it’s harmful for you, but even if you’re just going out or running errands, or running to the mall, as soon as you get exposed to the sun. It’s very bad for your skin already,” she said.
For Laureen, the trick is to make sure to keep a sunscreen handy so you can re-apply it several times a day. More than the SPF of the sunscreen, it’s how generously and how often you apply it.
Keep your base makeup light
During the summer, you want your skin to breathe, putting on as little products as possible. Ditch the full coverage foundation and go for something lighter, like a tinted moisturizer or a BB cream. Blending in a concealer with your moisturizer to turn into foundation also works. On her off days, Laureen shared that she likes to keep it simple by just using concealer, blush, and lipstick.
Don’t forget to show your hair some TLC
Sun, sand, and salt water can damage your hair fast, especially if it’s colored. Help bring back the moisture by using a conditioner that works for your hair type. If possible, also avoid putting too much heat on your hair. Go easy on the blow dryer and just let it air dry.
Bring a backup of your skin and beauty essentials
While it isn’t exactly imperative to have your beauty essentials, from protective sunscreen to hydrating mists, be travel-friendly, it certainly does help. Blogger Dani Barretto shared that she always keeps a back up of her favorite lotion, Vaseline Healthy White, inside her bag to reapply during the day.
“I have skin asthma so ‘pag overexposed ako sa sun lumalabas yung allergies ko (when I'm overexposed to the sun, my allergies come out). It keeps me safe from pollution, grime, other elements, skin damage,” she said. – Rappler.com
