Salad, rice, and soup buffet at Katsu Sora
This place takes the usual freebies that come with a katsu set and takes it up a notch

MANILA, Philippines – As far as Katsu places go, there are now a lot in Manila. They offer Katsu sets and other Japanese meals based on the fried favorites along with soup, cabbage, and rice – sometimes, in unlimited quantities.

Katsu Sora, a restaurant only roughly around 6 months old, joined the Katsu market last January.  Marketing Manager Allan Academia says in an effort to stand out, the owners made sure that people who go to the restaurant get what they paid for –  a full, well-cooked meal made with fine ingredients.

The restaurant is the first establishment in the Philippines to offer Spanish Iberico pork – one of the most sought after pork meat by foodies due to its butter-like texture and rich flavor. It’s also rich in good cholesterol.

Other establishments offer Japanese Kurobota pork known for its juicy quality, Shimofuri pork from Spain, which has a high percentage of intramuscular fat that leads to ‘marbling,’ and grain-fed pork from Canada called Sakura. The restaurant is the first establishment in the Philippines to offer Spanish Iberico pork – one of the most sought after pork meat by foodies due to its butter-like texture and rich flavor. Aside from more choices when it comes to pork, the restaurant offers more than just miso soup to go with their Katsu sets.

Customers have a choice of which soup they want to get on the first serving and will just have to go to the buffet area for a refill.

Choice include a couple of types of miso such as Awase, Shin-su Shiro, Inaka, Kaijiro, and Gen-en. They also have some Iriko Dashi (anchovy stock) and Shiokoji (rice koji and salt) soups.

Katsu Sora also installed a salad bar so as not to limit their customers with just the shredded cabbage that Katsu sets usually come with. They have a wide array of greens for the health-conscious customer.

The salad bar contains:

  • Romaine lettuce
  • Lolorosa lettuce
  • Iceberg lettuce
  • Cherry tomatoes
  • Corn
  • Broccoli
  • Cucumbers
  • White onions
  • Cabbage
  • Potato salad
  • Fresh fruits in season

As for dressings, the restaurant also offers a good selection:

  • Japanese sesame dressing
  • Japanese thousand island dressing
  • Japanese wasabi dressing

Another offering the restaurant is proud of is their Gokukumai Rice. It’s a special rice dish made of 5 different grains. It’s high in fiber, making it good for your digestive system and is more flavorful than your usual white rice.

Iberico pork Katsu sets will set you back at around P600 (US$13.67), Kurobota at around P500 (US$11.39), Shimofuri at P450 (US$ 10.26), and Sakura at P345 (US$7.86)
