MANILA, Philippines – In a bid to be more accessible and visible, local publishers produced the first annual Aklatan: The All-Filipino Book Festival, which celebrates the local publishing industry by bringing Filipino writers and their readers together.

Visprint Inc. and co-presenter National Book Development Board spearheaded the first festival. More than a book fair, Aklatan features multiple book launches and book-related seminars.

Aklatan aspires to be the premier assembly for writers and book lovers, as well as big-name and independent publishers.

Alphaland Southgate, Magallanes, hosted this year’s Aklatan on Saturday, September 7. Although doors were open as early as 8am, the formal program began at 9am.

Lourd de Veyra and Eros Atalia were among the featured writers, who also included their peers in contemporary literature and National Artists and other veteran writers.

The Balesin and Boracay Function Room in Makati will soon host talks and an “unwritten book audition” wherein writers will have the opportunity to pitch book ideas to eager publishers, “The Voice of the Philippines” style.

Visprint Inc. is a Pasay-based publishing house best known for Bob Ong’s books, Manix Abrera’s comic-strip compilations, and the award-winning “Trese” series.
