8 inspiring kids, teens prove age should never hold you back
A 9-year-old journalist, a 6-year-old photographer, a record-breaking runner with the heart of a champ, and more

MANILA, Philippines – Looking for a little inspiration? Check out these kids who are dreaming big and already making waves in their respective fields.

Krystal Brimner, ‘Annie’ and ‘Honor Thy Father’ actress

Krystal Brimner, 10, is currently one of the stars set to play the title role in the upcoming Manila revival of Annie.

But before she was cast in Annie, Krystal starred in Honor Thy Father with John Lloyd Cruz. For the movie, she had to chop off her curls in a scene, and she gamely followed through. In the video below, director Erik Matti said that he cut her hair himself. Watch:

Krystal won Best Child Performer in the Metro Manila Film Festival 2015.

Hawkeye Huey, photographer

Six-year-old Hawkeye Huey started taking pictures with an Instax when he was 4, and now he’s been published in National Geographic and released his own book of pictures. (LOOK: Talented 6-year-old’s stunning Nat Geo photos)

He is the youngest ever person to be published in Nat Geo and has also done work for Vogue

Hawkeye’s dad, Aaron Huey, is a National Geographic photographer, and decided it would be fun to give Hawkeye a camera on their father-son road trip two years ago.

In an interview with Today, Hawkeye said he likes the analog style too, because he can take pictures of people and then hand it to them: “I like taking pictures of people because sometimes you can actually hold the picture, you can’t delete it… If this were on the computer, you can just put it in the garbage.”

Hilde Lysiak, Orange Street News

Hilde is a 9-year-old reporter for her own monthly newspaper in Pennsylvania, Orange Street News. When she was the first on the scene of an alleged murder in her neighborhood, critics said a crime scene was no place for a little girl.

Hilde responded: “I know this makes some of you uncomfortable, and I know some of you just want me to sit down and be quiet because I’m 9, but if you want me to stop covering news, then you get off your computer and do something about the news. There, is that cute enough for you?”

Esang de Torres, Little Cosette in Les Miserables

Also known ask Lea Salonga’s “mini-me,” Esang stunned the audience and judges at ‘The Voice Kids’ season 2. Since then, she became an alternate for Little Cosette in ‘Les Miserables’ Manila and is set to play the same role in the Singapore production. A record-breaking runner from Davao, Mea joined Palarong Pambansa 6 times before she won gold.

Since her win, 16-year-old Mea has received recruitment offers from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Southern California (USC) in the US.

Mea is the only daughter of a farmer and a housewife, and she admitted that they have financial difficulties. “Kahit po nag-iisa ako, nakikita ko yung paghihirap at pagsa-sakripisyo nila kaya ginagalingan ko po,” Niñura said.

(Even though I’m an only child, I can see their hard work and sacrifices, that’s why I do my best.)

Boy-inventor Angelo Casimiro went viral after he made a life-sized Star Wars BB-8 droid that could be controlled with his smartphone.

But the 17-year-old has many other inventions under his belt, including an in-sole power generator – a power bank that charges your phone as you walk – that he made 2 years ago.
