Bianca King’s advice for fresh grads: Let heartache be fuel for your future
Bianca was a working student who graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking. She details her career heartbreaks and encourages fresh grads not to give up

MANILA, Philippines – Bianca King has a lot of things going for her right now – a new TV show, new projects in different fields, and a sunny outlook on life. Things weren’t always easy for Bianca, though – she tells Rappler that she’s learned so much from her college years as a working student, a time when she was required to balance school and showbiz commitments.

She graduated with a degree in Digital Filmmaking at the De La Salle College of St. Benilde. And now, she’s paying it forward with some great advice for fresh grads.

1. Make time for top priorities

“I was obsessive about writing down what I had to do, in the proper order. Setting my priorities was most important because I needed to make the most of the time I had. I also brought my school work to the set and did it during my free time. I chose my classes wisely, with enough days off to accommodate work,” Bianca told Rappler via e-mail.

2. Turn disappointments into opportunities

Bianca said the non-extension of her contract with GMA 7 was one of the turning points in her life. With no guarantee of work, Bianca decided to pursue her other passions – cooking, fitness and her blog.

“When I found out GMA was not renewing my contract after 10 years of being with the network, I was heartbroken. But within the same month of hearing the news, I enrolled in Center for Culinary Arts, Manila, enrolled in an online course to be a certified fitness nutrition coach, started mapping out an idea for my long overdue blog, and set my sights on pursuing my passion for food and fitness.

“I did not want to waste any time moping around and instead, used my heartache as fuel to seek a different future.  My blog The Closet Housewife now serves as a platform for all the things that are important to me,” she said.

Unknown to many, Bianca tried her luck auditioning for a cooking show abroad. The experience, she said, was very humbling – and worth it.

Bianca also talked about another setback from the past.

“I sent an audition video to be part of the Food Network Asia last year.  I was chosen as a finalist but I did not make the final cut. Nevertheless, being interviewed by the production people from Singapore was already a jackpot feeling for me. It made me believe that anything is possible.

“I used to be shy about it because I felt I looked like such an amateur but because I want to show people that it’s okay to be amateurish for the sake of pursuing your dreams. I’m posting it on my blog for the world to see!” Bianca said.

3. Apply skills you learned in the past

Aside from being a model, actress, yoga practitioner and entrepreneur, Bianca is now one the hosts of TV5’s new entertainment talk show Showbiz Konek na Konek

In an interview with reporters at the press conference, Bianca said finishing school helped her a lot in her showbiz work.

Pero dahil yung pagpili ko na makapagtapos ng college, nakatulong din siya sa confidence ko. (But my decision to finish college, it helped me with my confidence.)

Hindi ako ninenerbiyos kapag kailangan kong mag-rewrite ng script, yung mga ganoon,” Bianca said. (I don’t get nervous if I have to rewrite a script, thing like that.)

Bianca also told Rappler that with her educational background, she was able to understand the hard work that goes with being an actress.

“Understanding the ins and outs of TV and film production has helped me become more professional as an actress.  One of the biggest blessings of my career is my experience behind the camera as a production assistant, music video director and scholar in school. Because of this, I have a greater appreciation and respect for what everyone on set contributes to make a production happen,” she said.

4. Dream big – and take action!

With her many responsibilities, Bianca said priorities should be arranged carefully.

“Don’t settle for what seems easy. Following your passion usually results in greater achievement and fulfilment,” she said.

“My advice is outline everything you want to achieve. Arrange them in order of importance. Figure out what steps you need to take in order to achieve them. Then start working on it tomorrow. Don’t wait for a fairy godmother to place it on your lap.” –
