4 lessons on motherhood from LJ Moreno-Alapag, Nikka Garcia, and Isabel Oli
The 3 women share lessons on motherhood, career, and the importance of taking care of yourself

MANILA, Philippines – LJ Moreno-Alapag, Nikka Garcia, and Isabel Oli-Prats are the epitome of today’s young and modern women. They are wives, partners, mothers, and career women. In an event sponsored by Cetaphil at the SM Makati on August 27, the 3 moms talked about time management for themselves, partners, and their kids.

Here are 4 lessons and tips from LJ, Nikka, and Isabel on taking care of the family, career, yourself, and relationships.

1. On accepting acting and hosting engagements. LJ and Isabel shared that they have adjusted to their roles as housewives, but admit to missing the limelight.

“I do miss acting,” LJ said who is married to retired basketball player and coach Jimmy Alapag. “But I’ve been blessed because after I had the kids, I had a show na hosting naman… it’s very different when you do teleseryes eh because magdamag (it lasts overnight). At least yung mga hosting, we can somehow adjust [the] time.”

LJ also said that she considers her children when accepting projects, saying that when she asked her son if she can go back to work, he said no since she will be gone for a long time.

LJ previously hosted the show Happy Wife on TV 5.

In Isabel’s case, she said she loved what’s she’s doing and was looking forward to being a mom.

“I’d love to go back to showbiz and I really miss acting. The crying part, the pang-api or paawa part pero when I’m experiencing now with Feather sobrang is really priceless and hindi pa ako okay sa ngayon na ipagpalit iyon (I’m not ready to exchange that for anything yet),” she said.

Isabel added that at one point, she felt guilty for not contributing to the household and that husband, actor John Prats was the one always working. However, John assured her it was okay.

“He would always [say] na parang ‘alam mo, iyang ginagawa mo, hindi kakayanin namin mga boys okay.’ Sasabihin niya na ‘saludo kami kasi mas puyat iyan. Alam mo ba na mas mahirap maging mommy? And 9 months mong dinala iyan, so I think you deserve a break at least two years man lang because your body needs rest.”

(He would always say like, ‘you know, what you’re doing now, we boys can’t do that.’ He would say ‘we salute you because that’s a 24 hour thing. Do you know it’s hard to be a mommy? And you carried the baby for 9 months, so I think you deserve a break at least two years because your body needs rest.)

2. On staying in love with your partner, Nikka said that communication is very important.

“With me kasi, I’m very madaldal. I like to talk. I like to communicate with my husband. I always tell him na, ‘Oh, i-date mo naman ako.’ Kailangan open yung communication ninyo na he meets my needs. I tell him my wants para we’re both kumbaga satisfied ‘di ba?”

(With me, I’m very talkative. I like to talk. I like to communicate with my husband. I always tell him, ‘Oh, take me on a date.’ There has to be open communication between us so that he meets my needs. I tell him my wants so that we’re both satisfied, right? )

LJ said that she treasures the simple moments with Jimmy, like grocery shopping together or simple dinners. Isabel also said that she and John would go out to eat as well, or just set up a romantic dinner at the house.

All 3 women also said that it’s better to say what you feel and don’t make a guy guess what you want.

3. On taking care of yourself. Just because a you have other things to do doesn’t mean you should neglect yourself.

Isabel said one must really look for time for oneself despite packed schedules. She also makes the time to exercise as much as she can when her baby Feather is asleep.

Nikka, on the other hand, treasures the hours she gets to herself, like a an hour in the salon or a massage.

“I really believe that if you feel good about yourself, you’ll pass on a lot of positive energy, ‘di ba (right)? Kasi if feeling mo lousy ka, pangit mo, pangit ang surrounding mo, maiirita ka (Because if you feel lousy, ugly, your surroundings aren’t nice, you’ll be irritable). So you just have to find time for you, not forget you.”

LJ agreed with the two and added that she since her kids wake up very early, she adjusts and wakes up early for her prayer time.

4. Take care of your skin. Aside from using Cetaphil products because they’re the endorsers, LJ, Nikka, and Isabel said that they also never forget the simple things like removing their makeup or moisturizing their skin.

“I’m really lazy like when it comes to going to the derma[tologist],” LJ said, adding that she’s never been comfortable with sitting still when having facials. “I just make sure that I really wash my face and moisturize.”

Nikka said that while she goes to a dermatologist, she also lets her skin breathe by not applying makeup everyday.

Isabel said that she’s been using the same products since high school and even uses the same ones on her daughter.

LJ, Nikka, Isabel may be busy women, but they prove that you can be a mom, a wife, and a career woman, and still take care of yourself. – Rappler.com
