Vice Ganda ventures into makeup with Vice Cosmetics
MANILA, Philippines – Looking good doesn't have to cost a fortune. With the motto "Ganda for All" (Beauty for All), Vice Ganda's new makeup line, Vice Cosmetics, provides Pinay beauty junkies an affordable alternative to high-end brands without sacrificing quality.
In an interview with Vice during his TriNoma store visit on October 7, he said that the idea to start his own makeup company started when he was offered to endorse a cosmetics line.
"Matagal na 'kong nag-iisip ng negosyo na puwedeng pang-fallback kapag gusto nang magpahinga – not very soon – pero para maiba naman tayo nang pinagkakaabalahan, para may ibang bagay na nakaka-excite sa 'tin. So may nag-offer sa akin to endorse a cosmetics line, naisip ko bakit ako mag-e-endorse kung puwede ko naman gamitin 'yung sarili kong pangalan at gumawa ng sarili kong product? May mga nakausap akong US-based na ganito rin 'yung business na ginagawa so nag-collaborate kami," he said.
(I've been thinking for a long time about a business that I could do as a fallback, something I could focus on when I retire – not very soon – but just so there's something else I can do, something else that will excite me. There was a cosmetics company asking me to endorse their line, and I thought, why should I endorse when I can use my own name and make my own products? I was able to talk to some people in the US who have been doing this type of business, so I decided to collaborate with them.)
Ever since the idea came to him, Vice said he has been working nonstop to make his dream happen. According to him, he has been hands-on from day one, knowing that he wanted to launch his makeup line just in time for Christmas.
All products from Vice Cosmetics – from his lip kits to the traditional bullet lipsticks – are all designed and made in Los Angeles. The It's Showtime host proudly said that it can compete with foreign brands that carry a much higher price tag.
"Our products are very affordable but the quality is not [cheap]. It can be at par with international products that why I'm so proud of it," Vice said in a mix of English and Filipino.
With lipsticks starting at P195, these will surely fit the average woman's budget – something that Vice himself made sure of since the beginning.
"Kasi 'yun 'yung market ko ever since eh – market ng mga palabas ko, ng TV [shows] ko, ng kanta ko, ng mga pelikula ko. Masa talaga ang yumayakap sa akin so it's high time din for me na magbigay ako sa kanila ng madali nilang makukuha at ma-avail na talagang 'di nila pagsisihan. At saka kasi kung 'Ganda for All', kung 'di rin naman maa-avail ng pinakanakararami. 'di sya magiging 'Ganda for All,'" he said.
(The masses have always been my market ever since – they patronize my TV shows, songs, movies. It's always been the masses who have embraced me so it's high time that I give them something that's easily accessible and something they won't regret buying. And it won't be "Ganda for All" if not everyone can afford it.)
The lip kits are named after his TV shows such as Showtime, his real name Benjamin, Pony, Unicorn, Phenom, and other expressions he popularized. For the lipsticks, names include Aura, Ganderz, Kering Keri, Pak Ganern, and Tarush.
Coincidentally, Anne Curtis also recently launched her own makeup line, blk cosmetics. With the beauty market as saturated as it already is, Vice was asked how he felt about penetrating the highly competitive market, as well as going head-to-head with one of his friends.
According to Vice, there is always room for everyone at the top.
"The cosmetics market is really big. Ang laki-laki niya. Bihira ata 'yung babae na hindi nagli-lipstick, kahit anong edad, kulay mo. Pati lalaki nagli-lipstick. Lahat tayo nangangailangan ng lipstick mula sa pinaka-pangkaraniwang babae hanggang sa pinaka-kabogerang babae naka-lipstick," he said.
(The cosmetics market is really big. It's very big. I rarely see a girl who doesn't wear lipstick, no matter what age or skin color. Even guys wear lipstick. We all need lipstick, from the most simple woman to the most extravagant.)
Vice also said they will be adding more products to the Vice Cosmetics line by early 2018. From foundations to eyeshadow palettes to contour kits, he shared that his brand will be a one-stop shop for all things beauty.
But lipsticks will remain their priority, knowing that for most women, a look can't be complete without it.
"For me, that's the most important beauty product – lipstick – because you can go out without [fixing your] eyebrows, foundation, eyeshadow, blush. As long as you have lipstick, your face brightens up," Vice said in a mix of English and Filipino.
"But even if you have foundation, eyeliner, blush, contour, eyeshadow, and you don't have lipstick, you'll look dull. That's why I feel that lipstick is the most important." – Rappler.com
