Christmas gift ideas 2014: 25 fashion and beauty presents
Holiday collections, celebrity collaborations, tools for style tweaks – here are just a few of the items available for your fashion- or beauty-obsessed friend (or yourself) this holiday season.
1. Personalized lipstick from Estee Lauder
Just for the Christmas season, you can get your Estee Lauder Pure Color lipstick engraved with your name (or whatever you like) on the side. Lipsticks are very personal items and are a staple in one’s purse, making this a great gift for a special person in your life.
Price: P1400, the engraving is complementary with purchase of the lipstick
Get this: It’s available only at Estee Lauder at Rustan’s Makati from December 1 to 31.
Beautiful, stylish and chic French designer and model Inès de La Fressange’s collaboration with Uniqlo features coats with removable linings, basics in comfortable, classic cuts and shapes, and very neutral colors. The two above are samplings of the larger collection, available in stores.
Price: The tweed jacket above, P3990. The shirt, P1490
Get this: Uniqlo branches
3. Belle du Jour Box Elite: Corporate Chic
When you subscribe to a beauty box, you get an assortment of beauty products (depending on the brand, some are sample sizes, others full-sized) for a fraction of the price. This particular box contains products appropriate for daily use – no wild shades here – including four lipstick shades.

They’re just plain fun, easy to wear, and come in all sorts of designs. I especially like the robot and the watch ones; the latter comes in a whole variety of different colors.
Price: P250 each

5-9. Assorted apparel and accessories
Aside from retail staples, several collections and celebrity collaborations have made their way to stores this year. The Cara Delevingne and Penshoppe collaboration is still available in stores, and Karl Lagerfeld has a holiday collection with makeup brand Shu Uemura. Aside from that, endless options are available at the malls and online – including retail favorites such as Zara and Zalora.
Prices: 1. Cara Delevingne x Penshoppe pink vest (P1099) and shorts (P699) 2. Something Borrowed lace shift dress via Zalora 3. Blue carry-all from Zara (P2595) 4. Shu Uemura Shupette Eye Charm Trio (P2000) 5. MAC Keepsakes brush kit (P4000)
10-17. Beautiful makeup
They might be part of the brands’ holiday collections or part of the core lineup, they might be small stocking stuffers or the larger investment pieces – there’s nothing quite like beautiful, just-unwrapped makeup. Here’s a brief selection from the vast array that’s available out there.
Holiday collections often mean deeper fall shades in vibrant colors. I like the flirty vibe in this Clinique Party Lips and Nails Set, P2900. Includes Chubby Sticks lip color balm in Pudgy Peony and Voluptuous Violet, nail color in Hi Sweetie and Hot Date, and purple bag.
Maybe something for mom? Or take the set and distribute among friends. Clinique Great Skin Home & Away set, P5500, includes Liquid Facial Soap, Twice a Day Clarifying Lotion, Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, in two sizes. Also comes with a bag.
This tasty-looking set, P1399, is from Happy Skin’s 2014 holiday collection. I’m partial to deeper, darker shades, and the individual sticks make for pretty stocking stuffers.
The holiday sets from MAC are always highly anticipated, and this year’s, including the Heirloom Mix collection, are no exception. I’m especially attracted to the glitter (use sparingly!) which come in two highly pigmented, sparkly shades – antique gold and purple, P1300 each.
Another item from MAC (R), the Keepsakes eyeshadow palette (P3050) is another pretty makeup item. The Keepsakes palettes come in 3 colors: gray, black, and white, each housing a different set of colors – plum eyes, beige eyes, and smoky eyes, respectively.
The items from Etude House (L) are well-known for their princess-inspired, ultra-girly packaging. These “cake puffs” (P128) are a shade more entertaining to own than your usual makeup sponges.
You don’t need Bobbi Brown makeup to find Ms Brown’s Makeup Manual: For Everyone From Beginner To Pro (P799 via Fully Booked) useful. The book has been around for a while but is still one of the more instructive makeup tutorial books around today, with step-by-step instructions for everything from powder application to choosing the right lip color.
This year’s holiday collection is practical and appropriate for all sorts of occasions, not just the holiday parties – true to Bobbi Brown’s makeup philosophy. They’re pricey, but do last a long time. I’ve been using the same eye palette for well over a year daily, and there’s still plenty left over.
Prices: Deluxe Lip & Eye Palette P4,800. Mini Long Wear Cream Shadow Stick Trio P2,600. Mini Brush Set P4,300. Scotch on the Rocks Warm Glow Eye Palette P4,800. Bronze Glow Highlight Powder P2,700.
18. Heima pillows and canisters
Beautiful things brighten up a dreary office, room, or day. There's a nice quirky touch via these bright pineapple canisters – match them with the similarly colored accents on these Heima pillows.
Price: Pillows, P1200. Canisters, P1100

19. Books for entertainment, laughs, motivation, and/or all of the above
There’s Margaret Atwood’s masterful, gripping stories-within-the-story The Blind Assassin (P349), Lena Dunham’s Not That Kind Of Girl (P799), Tina Fey’s Bossypants (P640), Mickey Rapkin’s Pitch Perfect: The Quest for Collegiate A Cappella Glory (P640 and upon which the movie was loosely based), Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In (P880)…the list of funny, entertaining, thought-provoking books goes on and on. All but one of these are by amazing, stylish, powerful women – and one makes me think of Fat Amy, Beca, Chloe, and the rest of the Barden Bellas, and is also snappy and hilarious.
20. Manic Panic hair dyes
For the friend who likes to experiment with her look, Manic Panic dyes are ammonia- and peroxide-free and come in a whole variety of wild colors, including yellow, hot pink, and red.
Price: Classic cream formula at P800 each
Get this: Available via My Ticker Tape Parade
21. Cushion covers from H&M Home
With the arrival of the long-awaited arrival of H&M on Philippine shores comes H&M Home, which you’ll find in Robinson’s Magnolia, stocked full of affordable items with which to furnish one’s space. The cushion covers above are just 3 of many available in a range of pretty fabrics from linen to cotton, patterns from basic to sequined and plaid. Jacquard cushion cover, P899, and sequined cushion covers, P599.

22. Snoe beauty bars
There are a lot of beautiful items from local brand Snoe, but I especially like the variety of soaps, made of local ingredients and serving a variety of purposes, including pore minimization, exfoliation, and anti-ageing. They smell great.

23-24. Pretty new kicks
Casual, dressy or something in between? New shoes are always a holiday gifting option. Designer Francis Libiran collaborated with Havaianas to create his mini-collection of flip-flops, which will no doubt be popular at the stores this year. Or, you may want to shop around – I found these pretty brogues on sale at the Cole Vintage website.
Price: Havaianas City (P1195), Island (P1195), and Festival (P1395) by Francis Libiran. Cole Vintage Villanove White/Gold brogues (P399.50)
