Rajo Laurel accuses young designer of copying his design
Rajo is threatening legal action over the allegedly plagiarized design

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATED) Rajo Laurel recently took to social media, urging young designer Mariella Garcia of 37 LA to stop copying his “Iris” top design.

Attached to his tweet, dated July 5, was a screengrab of a girl wearing what Rajo says is a copy of his Iris top. The Instagram account attributed the design to Mariella, who calls the top “Luna.”

Rajo then tweeted a screengrab of Mariella’s Instagram account, saying that there is a difference between drawing inspiration and blatant copying.

Rajo demanded that Mariella take down all her posts of the design before tweeting a picture of himself and lawyer Karen Jimeno, threatening legal action.

Among Rajo’s supporters are Pinoy Big Brother host Bianca Gonzalez-Intal and Divine Lee, who both commented on Mariella’s picture. They told her it was Rajo’s design and asked her to take down her photos.

However, some of the followers  of 37 LA said that the design that Rajo made is not an original. It was reported that the top is patterned after the design by Dion Dee, an Australian designer.

The said design is part of the Australian designer’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection. However, upon checking the Rajo Laurel website, the “Iris” design, which is part of the Vreeland collection was showcased in 2013.– Rappler.com
