LOOK: Japan’s Books Kinokuniya now open at Mitsukoshi in BGC
The new Fully Booked x Kinokuniya branch showcases 'shelves upon shelves' of Japanese books, manga, and exclusive titles!

MANILA, Philippines – Heads up, Otakus! Philippine bookstore Fully Booked has partnered up with beloved Japanese bookstore Books Kinokuniya for its first branch in Metro Manila!

Kinokuniya’s 31st global branch is now open at the new Japan-inspired mall Mitsukoshi in Bonifacio Global City, which opened on Friday, November 18. The branch contains Fully Booked’s usual selection of titles, but with a twist – half of the store’s space is dedicated to “shelves upon shelves” of Japanese books and both English and Japanese manga, plus other special titles that you would only find in this store.

“With half of the branch earmarked for manga, we hope that manga readers will be delighted with the assortment of titles available,” said Fully Booked Managing Director Jaime Daez on the bookstore’s official blog.

Books Kinokuniya is Japan’s largest bookstore chain. Founded in 1927, it now has over 80 stores in Japan and countries worldwide, such as the US, Singapore, Thailand, and Australia, to name a few.

Daez shared that the company has been working with Books Kinokuniya since 2019. “Our partnership enabled us to experiment with titles that could work in the Philippine market and discover valuable insights about what readers want to see on the shelves,” he said.

“With the opening of a Japanese themed mall, we felt it was the right time to take it to the next level and offer Filipino readers a really extensive range of Japanese manga never before seen in any of our stores.”

The branch also features a graphic wall mural created by New York-based Japanese illustrator Yuko Shimizu. It sees Filipino and Japanese characters aboard a flying, winged tricycle, meant to depict “the fusion of Japanese and Filipino cultures through the shared experience of reading.”

You can visit Fully Booked’s branch on the second floor of newly-opened Mitsukoshi Mall, which is located on 8th Avenue corner 36th street of Bonifacio Global City. – Rappler.com
