'I think what went wrong is that I lack support. Nobody, like, assisted me, emotionally, I'm drained from all the work and not being myself,' says Imelda on her loss

MANILA, Philippines – Following her controversial reign, former Miss Earth Philippines 2016 Imelda Schweighart has spoken up about her Miss Earth loss, her bashers, and her comments on the winner, Katherine Espín.

In an episode of Tonight with Boy Abunda that aired on Thursday, November 3, Imelda explained why she stepped down as Miss Earth Philippines a few days after the international pageant.

“I don’t want to be a bad example. I think, you know, I carry the name of Miss Philippines Earth, sa nag-viral ang na video na yun, sabi ko, ‘Ang perception ko ng isang Miss Earth kasi is natural (in the video that went viral, I said, ‘My perception of a Miss Earth is natural).’ For me, natural beauty wins, personally, which is my right,” said Imelda.

She was referring to a viral video of her telling fans after the pageant that Katherine, who hails from Ecuador, has had cosmetic surgery.

In her resignation letter, Imelda did not mention the video, but said that she had to accompany her mom abroad and could not fulfill her duties.

“I’m sorry. I know it [the crown] was destined for her [Katherine]. I’m happy for her. That’s bad, what I said there and it’s not a good example, like, I’m the mother of haters. So I didn’t want to be that — you know, encourage people to do the same,” she continued.

Imelda did not make it to the Top 16 of the international pageant, which was held at the Mall of Asia Arena.

On her loss, Imelda commented: “I think what went wrong is that I lack support. Nobody, like, assisted me, emotionally, I’m drained from all the work and not being myself. You know, yung pagpipigil sa totoong ako (keeping down my true self), it’s just too much for me. Parang (It’s like) I cannot be myself because you have to be this, you have to be that.”

Imelda faced criticism from pageant fans during the competition as well, after telling Miss Austria that President Rodrigo Duterte was doing “Hilter stuff” in the Philippines. She has since apologized for the incident.

On her bashers, Imelda said: “Whatever you say, bumabalik lang din naman sa inyo (It will go back to you). Kasi whatever comes out from your mouth, that’s what you are.

“Mali ‘yun, e (It’s wrong),” she said. “People have no right talaga (really) to trample all my hard work since no bad side of me can destroy that. I have a bad and a good side. Every person has that.”

Imelda stepped down as Miss Earth Philippines 2016 on October 31. Loren Artajos, Miss Philippines Earth-Water 2016, has since taken over Imelda’s role as Miss Earth Philippines. – Rappler.com
