Ms PH Earth Santo Tomas, Batangas: Mary Rose Pujanes
NAME: Mary Rose C. Pujanes
MUNICIPALITY OR CITY: Sto. Tomas, Batangas
How she describes her childhood: I spent my growing up years with my grandparents. I grew up with separated parents—separated not by their personal differences and conflicts but by their professional pursuits as OFWs. My mother was a domestic helper in Italy while my father was a production person of a popular food brand in Dubai.
Just like a typical “OFW kid,” I was able to experience a convenient, comfortable childhood. However, I also learned to accept the fact that it would be close to impossible for me to experience having a “complete” family with my parents working in different parts of the globe. Christmases, birthdays, graduation days and all the other important milestones in my life were spent either with just one parent or with none at all. Raised only by my grandparents, I grew up in a very conservative environment that was focused mainly on school, church and home.
Environmental advocacy: Ensuring a vibrant ecotourism industry in the country would translate to brighter economic prospects for the country in terms of jobs and business opportunities for Filipinos. However, this can only be done if we are able to ensure that our ecotourism spots are kept the way they are. Given this, my environmental advocacy is: no to trail erosion. Come for the experience. Enjoy the view. But don’t leave a mark. – Rappler.com
