Social Media: Filipinos all praises during Pia Wurtzbach parade
MANILA, Philippines – Monday, January 25, was the highly anticipated homecoming parade of Pia Wurtzbach, the country’s first Miss Universe in 42 years. It’s been weeks since the controversial coronation, but the hype has not died down – especially not for Filipinos.
While thousands of supporters flocked to the parade route to catch a glimpse of Miss Universe, tweets also flooded timelines everywhere. Using a powerful social listening tool called Radian6, AFDigital tracked and analyzed social media posts to see how netizens took the beauty queen's homecoming.
There was a steady flow of mentions throughout the parade. Fans gushed over Pia's stunning smile and silhouette, her sea-green Albert Andrada gown, and her shining personality.
There was a significant spike in tweets as the parade began at 3 pm in Manila – proof of just how excited the crowd was for the spectacle. There was also a surge of posts when Pia reached the Araneta Center at 7 pm, where she stood resplendent in a biege Mark Bessie Besana gown.
Excitement over inconvenience
In spite of the inevitable traffic and inconvenience the parade brought, numbers show that many people were excited to witness it. Out of the 3,006 mentions on social media, only 29 were negative. The rest were either positive or neutral, just in admiration and in awe of the beauty queen.
Still the ‘Most Beautiful Day’
Interestingly, the 29 negative mentions were neither directed towards Pia nor the traffic. Supporters were mostly disappointed that they didn’t see the stunner due to class or work, or because they were simply too far from the parade route.
Along the parade route, Pia's fans waved their Philippine flags and banners, cheering their hearts out while immortalizing the moment on social media.
It was a glorious homecoming fit for a historic victory.
