MANILA, Philippines – Another top model will try her luck in the beauty pageant scene this year.
Model Catriona Gray was one of the ladies present at the first screening of Miss World Philippines on Thursday, August 18 at the B Hotel in Quezon City.
In an interview with Rappler before the screening, Catriona talked about what finally made her decide to try her luck.
“I don’t know. I was even kind of surprised myself. I didn’t expect it because I kind of look at the whole pageantry thing in a certain light before. And all of a sudden, parang overnight, I saw it in a different perspective and I looked at it as the heart of it is the advocacy. So that’s what made me fall in love with it. So that’s why I’m joining Miss World,” she said.
Accompanied by her pageant sisters from Aces and Queens, Catriona, like everyone in the group, said they all look up to Miss World 2013 Megan Young, who was also under the same group before she won.
The Filipino-Australian model also shared more details about her advocacy. Aside from modeling, Catriona also has a blog and sings.
“Well, I held a benefit concert, my project is the Paraiso Bright Beginnings Project. I’m in partnership with an organization called Young Focus and they are situated in Tondo Manila and they help provide free accessible education to the kids there.
“So I’m raising funds so that they can procure another building to make a school because there are so many children that are in need of education and in their circumstance, they may not necessary have access to it. So I’m working to raise funds to allow that to become a reality for these kids,” she said.
When asked what her good friend Miss World Philippines 2014 Valerie Weigmann told her before the training, Catriona said: “She really just told me to have fun and be myself because she really enjoyed the experience… she said that she had learned a lot of it as a person and gained a lot of friends out it so I’m keeping that in mind going through the competition.
“I don’t want to feel like it’s game on all the time and I also want to have fun with my fellow sisters. I feel very blessed because we’re such a great group of girls and we all get along and we are really great friends,” she said.
Before the screening, Catriona also posted a thank you message on her Instagram page to her supporters.
“I’m so excited to finally announce the beginning of my journey. I’m so humbled and grateful for all the support I’ve received thus far! Salamat sa lahat! (Thank you everyone) Let’s do this!!,” she said.
