Why Derek Ramsay is emotional over 2nd MMFF Best Actor award
Derek says he does not mind being second choice, saying the movie is a blessing for him

MANILA, Philippines – He already won a Best Actor award for his role in English Only Please back in the Metro Manila Film Festival in 2015, but the second time is different for Derek Ramsay as he won for his role in All of You. (FULL LIST: Winners of the MMFF 2017 Gabi ng Parangal)

“I’m very very proud today. I want to dedicate this to my son because he’s here with me. It’s perfect timing. God is great because I haven’t seen him in two years and he’s here to witness his dad here up onstage to be receiving a prestigious award,” he said, referring to his son Austin during the Metro Manila Fillm Festival awards night on Wednesday, December 27.

Austin is his son with his ex-wife Mary Christine Jolly, whom he had a custody issue with in 2014.

Derek  said that he was moved when his name was called. He added that he became emotional because Austin was able to see him go up on stage.

“I was trying my best not to sound so emotional but it kind of did. It goes to show how proud I am of this and how appreciative I am of all the wonderful things they have to say about my performance.”

He also said that the movie was a blessing for him, considering he was not the first choice. Jericho Rosales was initially supposed to be the leading man of Jennylyn Mercado in the film.

“You know, most of the projects that I’ve done, I’ve always been second choice. It’s not something to be ashamed of. You’re blessed that it went to you. So galingan mo yung trabaho, pagbutihin mo (do your best in your work, work hard), and when you do that, great things happened to you.

“I think like the movie I am doing next is the first movie I’m going to be doing as the first choice. So i don’t know, maybe second choice is lucky for me,” he said.

Derek also said that he would love to work with Jericho in a project. He shared that one of the starting points of his career was appearing in the TV version of Panday, which Jericho did years back.

“I was guesting on [defunct show] ETK. I was completely lost because I did not completely know anything about showbiz… any showbiz personalities except for Vina Morales, who is my friend. So I was lost in that show, natutuwa sila sa akin (they found me amusing),  and the opportunity for me to travel to Bohol for Panday, to work with Jericho, I was like you know ‘let’s give this a shot’. So I did and the rest is history,” he said.

“I learned a lot from Echo and you know, to be second choice to an Echo is how can you feel bad about that,” he added.

Aside from Derek’s win, All of You also won the 3rd Best Picture Award in the festival. The actor was also given the Male Star of the Night award.

On Instagram, Derek wrote: “Thank you to MMFF for this prestigious award. I’m so proud that my son witnessed this unforgettable experience. [Dan Villegas] thank you for guiding me and helping me bring life to Gab. Thanks to [Jennylyn Mercado] for being such a great leading lady.  [Salazar] sa lahat ng team #allofyou mas lalo na kay (To everyone in team All of You most especially to) Atty Joji [Alonso], Carl and Patty. Love you all. Congratulations to all of us.”
