MANILA, Philippines – It’s one of those rare cases of a useful technology reportedly being used for misdeeds. According to the Kansas City Star, a burglary victim believes she was victimized with the help of surreptitious GPS tracking.

According to the report, the victim, who owns a jewelry business in Overland Park, Kansas, said GPS tracking devices were discovered on her vehicle and on another vehicle owned by her son after the March burglary of their home.

She believes GPS trackers could have told burglars when no one was in her home, so they could know when to get in, take some loot, and get out.

While a suspect, Steven Alva Glaze, has already been charged in Johnson County District Court with “14 counts of criminal damage to property, theft, attempted burglary and burglary,” police and prosecutors declined to comment on the allegations of GPS tracking. Glaze’s attorney, William Grimshaw, was continuing to investigate, declining to comment in the meantime.

Glaze is accused of the theft of over US$100,000 (approximately P4.12-M) in “jewelry, purses, wallets, luggage, coins and fur coats,” though the victim asserts the losses as being closer to thrice the amount. – Rappler.com
