MANILA, Philippines – Free messaging app Line is immensely popular in a number of countries, with around 200 million users worldwide.

In a bid to increase its popularity even further, however, Line is shooting for a difficult target: by aiming to have nearly every person in Taiwan become a Line user.

The Focus Taiwan News Channel reports that Line has partnered with local companies in a bid to double its current penetration in the Taiwanese market to 20 million users. As a point of reference, however, Taiwan had around 23.31 million citizens in 2012.

Hyun-bin Kang noted that Taiwan was a top-tier market for Line, adding that “Many smartphone users in the country are already our customers, and the market is expected to become more saturated as we hit the 20-million mark.”

Kang mentioned their approach would be to continue marketing line as a free messaging app, using its team-ups with companies to promote the app further and provide additional content.

Back in February, Line officially made its presence known to Philippine audiences. It had around 110 million users at the time, and hoped to expand into more territories by providing localized content for consumers in a given area. – Rappler.com
