MANILA, Philippines – This year’s arrival of Google Glass ushers in a new age of wearable computing. Not just the game in a watch-kind, but computers that you can wear. The shift is proof that the mark of a great piece of technology is one that works like its supposed to, but in a way that you don’t even realize it’s there.

In the tech scene you’d expect Apple, the company that pushed smartphones to the next level with the original iPhone to be a major player in the wearable computing space. Over the last two years it has been rumored that the Cupertino-based company has been working on a device fans lovingly refer to as the iWatch. And while Apple has yet to confirm the device’s existence CEO Tim Cook recently talked about how the smartwatch market was an, “area ripe for exploration”.

But the big news this week is that fierce rival Samsung might just beat Apple to the punch. This week at Samsung’s Unpacked Episode 2 event in Berlin, Germany the Korean tech giant is set to unveil it’s take on a smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear.

While nothing is “Samsung official” at the moment, there is more than just speculation online. On Sunday, Venture Beat published an article claiming that it got early access to the device.

The tech site describes the Galaxy Gear as a “clunky 3-inch wrist mounted accessory”.

The Galaxy Gear will run the Android operating system and is designed to work in tandem with existing Samsung Galaxy smartphones via Bluetooth.

Presumably because it carries the Galaxy branding, Venture Beat reports Gear comes with all the bells and whistles you’d expect in a Galaxy device including a 4-megapixel camera, a built-in microphone that supports voice commands, WiFi and built-in speakers.

Multiple sources of tech blog GigaOm say the device described by Venture Beat is a prototype and that the device set to be released on Wednesday (Thursday Manila time) is a “different, more finished product.” But the fact remains there will be a smart-watch from Samsung.

GigaOm and Amongtech report that the device will sport a 2.5-inch screen and will be powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM.

It would be interesting to see if the Youm flexible displays Samsung unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas back in January will be use on the device for a more ergonomic fit, imagine the display wrapping around your wrists

Tech rumors Twitter account @evleaks, notable for various credible leaks posted screenshots of the companion Gear Manager app. Possibly the user-interface for managing the device from your smartphone.
