The TALOS combat suit aims to provide protection and information for combatants

MANILA, Philippines – The US Army is hoping to consolidate technological advancements for use in the battlefield as its Special Operations Command teams up with various universities, laboratories, and tech specialists to build a combat suit reminiscent of the Iron Man comics.

Currently known as the Tactical Assault Light Operator Suit (TALOS), the TALOS hopes to combine lightweight armor protection with state-of-the-art technology for surveying the battlefield.

According to an August report by National Public Radio, Adm. Bill McRaven told people about the idea at a conference in May, drawing inspiration from the death of one of his troops in Afghanistan.

McRaven explained at the conference, “One of our folks going through the door was killed by the Taliban on the other side in an attempt to rescue a hostage.”

McRaven then challenged conference-goers to improve the protection of soldiers, saying, “Why haven’t we put effort into ensuring particularly that guy going through the door … is protected to the maximum capability that we can provide him, as a nation?”

Currently, the TALOS is a concept made up of existing technologies that need to be combined into a cohesive whole. Jim Geurts, who buys the equipment for the command, noted that it may take a year to even choose the technologies they want to bring together.

While the future result of this development may not fly like an Iron Man suit, it does hope to provide soldiers with better protection and information to make important tactical decisions during combat.
