Radionomy acquires Shoutcast, Winamp
MANILA, Philippines – Reports indicate AOL sold online radio directory Shoutcast and music player Winamp to Radionomy, an online radio station aggregator from Belgium.
A source later told TechCrunch that the deal was for the sale of Winamp and Shoutcast, to be finalized by Friday, January 3, at the latest.
AOL announced the shutdown of Winamp in November, leading to a formal shutdown of Winamp by Dec 20, 2013. The Winamp music player software, as well as support services for that product, ceased to be available through Winamp.com after that date.
Radionomy has some 6,000 stations in its repertoire. The purchase of Shoutcast, which has a catalog of around 50,000 stations, is a significant increase to its stable of online radio stations.
There have been speculations that the Winamp purchase could make it easier to program the stations or add new services to Radionomy. – Rappler.com
