Sam YG’s 8 tips to a fun, hassle-free Boracay weekend
'Walwal' nights? 'MOMOL' rules? Sam YG tells us how to maximize your trip to Boracay

BORACAY, Philippines – With the excruciating heat, hordes of people, and parties happening simultaneously, surviving Boracay this Labor Day Weekend may just take a toll on one’s body.

But it’s doable!

We caught up with DJ, host, entrepreneur, and everyday funny guy Sam YG right after he got a massage at the Nestea Beach Chill Station here on the island.

He tells Rappler that surviving Boracay during one of its busiest seasons can be easy and hassle-free just by following his 9, simple tips.

1. Bring and lather on some sunblock

Siyempre, ‘yang sun na ‘yan very dangerous ‘yan,” he says. (“Of course, that sun is very dangerous,” he says.)

While on the island, everyone is on a high risk of getting sunburn. Don’t spoil your party vibe by getting cooked-lobster-red skin, which totally hurts! Pick a product with SPF 50 or higher and apply it frequently througout the day. (READ: 6 tips for a healthier tanning experience)

2. Plan ahead for your ‘walwal’ nights

(Note: “Walwal” is a Filipino colloquial term for “getting wasted”)

Sam hosts and goes to a lot of parties where drinking can be hard to avoid. He’d prefer staying up all night at a party. He says to get ready for an event, he loads up on vitamins and hydrates himself. It’s also a good idea not to go drinking with an empty stomach.

But one thing that may just help keep you dancing till the wee hours of the morning is learning to choose your battles. Plainly: “Hindi lahat ng shot na ibibigay sayo, iinumin mo,” he says. (“You don’t drink all the shots given to you,” he says.)

“Chances are, you’re enjoying the vibe, you’re enjoying the company of your friends. So you take a shot then you take another shot. And before you know it, you’re [drunk] and it’s only 9 or 10 pm and there’s still a long night to go,” he adds.

It’s always best to start slow, work your way up, and space your drinks evenly. Drink water when you get the chance during the party.

Don’t schedule a boat tour to other islands or any other island activity the following day, which may require you to move around a lot. After a long night of partying, it’s best to recuperate the next day by sleeping in, rehydrating yourself, and just chilling by the beach.

3. Let loose

Being in an island paradise and party destination like Boracay can be a chance to let go of your inhibitions in the city.

After all, you’re here to party hard. Sam says it’s okay to put on a different hat once in a while.

“You can leave your personality at home. Therefore, you can be somebody you’re not –  or be your Facebook personality. Kasi di ba ‘yung nilalagay sa Facebook hindi naman totoo yan. Gusto mo maging likable sa mga tao,” Sam says. (“The people put on Facebook aren’t always true because they want to be likable to people.)

So if you know that you’re a terror boss or a snooty employee back home, now’s your chance to be the cool, carefree party girl you’ve always wanted to be.

4. Keep your feelings in check when you MOMOL

(Note: MOMOL is an acronym for “Make Out, Make Out Lang,” which Sam and his fellow radio DJs Tony Toni and Slick Rick coined on their radio show Boys Night Out. It means making out with a person with no strings attached.)

“If you’re gonna MOMOL, make sure na ‘wag kang ma-attach,” Sam says. “What happens in Boracay stays in Boracay, they say. Sa akin, what happened in Boracay never happened.”

(“If you’re going to make out with someone, make sure you don’t get attached,” Sam says. “What happens in Boracay stays in Boracay, they say. To me, what happened in Boracay, never happened.”)

So kapag may imo- MOMOL ka d’yan, make sure your emotions are in check. ‘Wag ka masyado padala kasi you’re setting yourself up for heartbreak and that’s the last thing you want – having a heartbreak after a vacation,” he says.

Sam adds that you should not forget your lip balm and some breath mints. Keep them with you at all times – you wouldn’t want to miss a good MOMOL opportunity when it presents itself.

5. Mingle with the right people

If you’re in Boracay and you’re on the prowl to meet someone who may end up being your “significant other,” Sam says you better make sure that you don’t find yourself flirting with people who are already spoken for. You wouldn’t want to get yourself in trouble.

And if he or she is really worth the time, Sam says you should go for a classic move. “If mukhang okay, yayain mo na mag-walk by the beach. The classic Boracay walk of shame. Alam na,” he adds, laughing.

(“If he/she seems okay, go have a walk by the beach. The classic Boracay walk of shame. You’ll know,” he adds, laughing.)

6. Starting to smell funky due to the heat? There’s a simple solution

Too much heat can cause you to sweat profusely and even smell weird. With the volume of people in Boracay this season, they’re bound to smell you as you walk around D’Mall or while you’re dancing at the Steve Aoki party on Sunday.

Kapag feeling mo fuma-funky ka na, kaya nga nandiyan ang ocean eh. Make a run for the ocean,” Sam says. It will wash off the sweat and instantly freshen you up. He adds that it also pays to have friends who can alert you should you need to make a dash for the sea.

7. Don’t forget to bring ‘protection’

Kasi minsan… umuulan,” Sam says with a sly smile. (“Because sometimes… it rains,” Sam says with a sly smile.)

8. Don’t forget to have fun!

The number one priority! “If you want to lose yourself, you have all the right to because we all work hard. The city is a different species – you’re in an island so enjoy,” he says.

However, you should still keep yourself in check. Sam reminds his fellow party-goers in Boracay this season to “Drink moderately and MOMOL responsibly.” – Rappler.com
