We are also Asia's Leading Dive Destination for the third consecutive time!

The Philippines has bagged two prestigious titles at the World Travel Awards 2021 once again – we are Asia’s Leading Beach Destination for the fifth time and Asia’s Leading Dive Destination for a third consecutive time.

The Asia winners of this year’s 28th World Travel Awards were announced on their website on Tuesday, October 19.

According to the Department of Tourism (DOT), the top nine diving spots in the country include Cebu’s Mactan Island; Sarangani Bay; Palawan’s Tubbataha Reef National Park; Cebu’s Malapascua Island; Negros Oriental’s Apo Island; Bohol’s Balicasag Island; Cabilao Island; Panglao; Anilao in Batangas; and Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro.

High-end beach resort Amanpulo in Palawan was also given the title of Asia’s Leading Private Island Resort for 2021.

Hotels like City of Dreams Manila, Discovery Primea, and Savoy Hotel also received recognition this year.

The Philippines is currently in the running for the following global titles for 2021: World’s Leading Beach Destination; World’s Leading Dive Destination; World’s Leading Island Destination with Siargao as the contender; World’s Leading Tourist Attraction with Intramuros; and World’s Leading Tourist Board with Department of Tourism.

The UK-based World Travel Awards, which was established in 1993, “serves to acknowledge, reward, and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global travel and tourism industry.”

“Each year, WTA covers the globe to recognize and celebrate individual and collective success within each key geographical region,” the website reads.

Popular tourist destinations Siargao, Boracay, and Palawan were recently recognized as three of the Top Islands of 2021, according to Conde Nast Traveler.

Siargao was also named one of the best holiday destinations of 2020 by Conde Nast Traveler and recognized as the “Best Island in Asia” in October 2018. The surf spot was also among Time magazine’s “World’s Greatest Places” for 2021. – Steph Arnaldo/Rappler.com
