14 stunning photos of Siargao, a surfer's paradise

MANILA, Philippines – Cloud 9, located in Siargao Island in the province of Surigao del Norte, is a very popular surf spot, having been recognized by outlets like CNN as a top surfing destination

Siargao is a go-to destination for international and locals surfers all throughout the year, earning its title as the surfing capital of the Philippines. Surfers enjoy big, beautiful waves that come in all year from the Pacific Ocean, with strong ones coming in around the end of September until March. (READ: Surfing in the city)

Although Cloud 9 is the most popular and accessible spot, Siargao Island also has many other alternative surf spots when it gets crowded.

See more photos of the stunning location here, taken right around the time of the 2014 Cloud 9 Surfing Cup in September.

Seen in some of the photos here, Piso Alcala, together with other local surfers from around the Philippines, were featured in the Filipino surf film entitled Archipelago last December 2014.

Filmed and directed by Mark Mabanag, the film was shot over a span of three years and explores the surfing world, as seen from the country's beautiful locations, including La Union, Baler and Siargao. (READ: Get Stoked: 7 lesser-known PH surf spots

Viewers get to see some of the country's finest surfers demonstrate their passion for their craft (and those amazing moves) in the water. Watch the trailer here:

For non-surfers, there's still plenty to do in Siargao. You can go around to see the island via motorbike, chat with the friendly locals, or just relax at the pristine beaches. Even the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Anthony Kiedis made a stop in Siargao to check out the waves, heading there after the band's performance at 2014's 7107 Music Festival.
